The Bible In Paintings 2 ENCOURAGEMENT FOR APPRECIATING AND APPLYING GOD'S MESSAGE |
2nd SAMUEL CHAPTER 13 Absalom went to the king and said, “Will the king and his officials please join me?” “No, my son,” the king replied. “All of us should not go; we would only be a burden to you.” Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon come with us.” The king asked him, “Why should he go with you?” But Absalom urged him, so he sent with him Amnon and the rest of the king’s sons. Absalom ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Have not I given you this order? Be strong and brave.” So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules and fled.

Meanwhile, Absalom had fled and went to Geshur; he stayed there three years. And the spirit of the king longed to go to Absalom, for he was consoled concerning Amnon’s death. Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem. But the king said, “He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.” So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king. Absalom lived two years in Jerusalem without seeing the king’s face. Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.

Good morning to all ‘appreciators of Biblical art’ gathered here.
Thank you Dan; a great way to start our post Memorial Day workweek. You chose quite a variety of ‘new’ artists =:^)

This is a Bible story of which I have no recollection, which means it is way past tie for me to revisit the story of David in scripture.
Of course, everyone knows about Absolom’s great head of hair...

I just play the hand I'm dealt, Leon.
Three weeks ago when I created this thread it included a Chagall, but yesterday when I teed it up its link was broken. Oh well....

Good for you, Ben. In addition to 1st & 2nd Samuel, be sure to include 1st Chronicles. Have fun!

The best for me is the study by Guercino in #3. Dramatic, brutal, tragic. The painter Francesco Bartolozzi reproduced the assassination of Amnon from this drawing by Guercino but less effective, in my opinion.

I agree, which is why I led off with it. Generally, I prefer “closeups” like that which focus on the central event.

Hi.
Ben has me curious, I don’t remember seeing many paintings of Absalom with his hair caught in a tree.
I’ll stay tuned...

Hearing from you is ALWAYS and at all times a pleasure.
Hope your evening and night are placid and peaceful--after all, one of Jesus' many names is "Old Mr. Storm-Calmer". Well, He never actually ages, being the same yesterday, today and forever....but He did start calming them a long, long time ago, so....
