CHAPTER 5

All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’ ”

When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a compact with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel.

David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

So many beautifully paintings, sculptures and stained glass windows. Preferred are the statues at #9 and #16, the great Berruguete at #10; #18 by the Chinese illustrator Gene Chan; #28 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (Pre-Raphaelite); the splendid, intense David by Rembrandt at #30 and the exellent and very detailed David by the French Symbolist painter and sculptor Gustave Moreau at #31.

These pictures are some real favorites! Hard to choose a ‘best one’, but 27 Guercino, 29 Schindler and 34 Stom are so lifelike, expressing real emotion.

Alba informs us that #18 is by Gene Chan. It is very bold and striking: I am struck by David's blood-colored garment.

Those messianic Jews have abundant reason for joy and reverence.
