Muhammad is simply the transliteration of the Arabic given name. It's a Romanized version of his Arabic name.

It's worded in a lot of different ways though, e.g. Muhammad, Mohammed, Ahmed, Mahmud, etc..

"Mahomet" is an older spelling which used to be common.

There's a place called Mahomet in Illinois (near Champaign) but apparently that's from an American Indian name.
