Thank you for a very informative post.
I really like hard news articles like this.
Paul Simon recommends a Bridge over those repetitive verses.
That’s funny right there. I don’t care who you are. My wife and oldest son are both worship leaders at our church. We get it.
What, no bridge???
Most CCM these days can be correctly called “7/11 Music”.
Seven words repeated eleven times.
And most of it has nothing to do with Scripture.
Actually, I think this critique applies more to contemporary pop music than to contemporary Christian music, some of which remains very melodic. Darlene Zschech - formerly of Hillsong - comes to mind.
Ah, the band descends into a praise coma.
I didn’t get it either, until the key change.
Then I laughed my donkey off!
Just be thankful you aren’t one of the four living creatures or one of the 24 elders up in Heaven. Day and night they never stop saying. (Note the repetition in the verses as well!).
Revelation 4:8-11
Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
โโHoly, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,โ
who was, and is, and is to come.โ
Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.โ
It needs a bridge.
Unlike a lot of popular music that has cycles of
“Baby, baby, ooh, ooh, Baby...”
“Baby, baby, ooh, ooh, Baby...” “Baby, baby, ooh, ooh, Baby...”
“Baby, baby, ooh, ooh, Baby...”
...
Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Halleluuuuuajah.
The songs start as reverent whispers then build to singer aggrandizing exhibitions.
Key change....
Now, that is innovative.....
Encapsulates exactly why I canโt stand it.
Ohhh, oohhh...ooohhhhhh.
