Michelangelo painted the Last Judgement 25 years after he did the ceiling. Yes, it caused a lot of controversy, not only for the nudity but also for having added mythological figures. Three works by Perugino were destroyed to make room for this fresco...what a pity!
In mid-1500, an art loving Cardinal commissioned a Mannerist artist, Marcello Venusti, to paint a copy of the original Last Judgement. It survives as the only document we have of Michelangelo’s uncensored painting.
