Love the Jan Steen. What a moment!
By the way, it's now 500-1.
I also like Jan Steen’s painting. He was considered a kind of a humorist artist but he treated this biblical event with respect, the composition is balanced and a mastery of color and light. The scene is in a place like a tavern; the two disciples are absorbed in thought and sadness, they have not yet realized that their companion is their beloved Master. After he talks to the disciples, Christ’s evanescent form recedes through the door.
Steele emphasizes Jesus’ disappearance, which was simultaneous with their first recognition of His identity. Had Jesus lingered, they would have been all over Him, and their intense interaction with Him then would have overwhelmed the extensive lessons He had given them. Their three or four hours with the risen Lord were about the lessons, rather than the hugs.
