Thank you for the wonderful link, etabeta. I saw Hebrews 11:6's comment first, and I thought of "fishers of men", but was confused by the Spanish grandee costumes the fishermen were wearing. Glad the video explained that the men and fishing boat were indeed intended to symbolize the Great Commission, and also that the seven hills are the continents.
It is a magnificent painting, so transcendent a vision. Wikipedia says someone attacked the painting with a stone and ripped it with their hands, but it was carefully restored. Even an image of Christ does bring the demons to the surface, does it not?
