All great, especially Caravaggio, Stom, Honthorst, Bloch, Carracci and Cranach. Extremely moving is the dignity in Jesus’ submission to these horrible tortures. Supported and sustained by the Holy Spirit, profound example for all of us.
Indeed, they will, when Moses’ terrible prophecy is fulfilled.
Exactly my reaction, too. You are very eloquent, Alba.
Your comment
think the soldiers did the crown of thorns and mocking on their own, not under Pilate’s orders.
I agree, lets not forget that when the crowd called for Our Lords crucifixion Pilate publicly washed his hands to demonstrate his disagreement .
Thanks for posting, I think the Bosch is zoomed in on a larger painting in the National Gallery in London. The savage cruelty of the torture shines through in all of them. The larger version of Bosch has four people around Jesus with a whole lot of symbolism going on. Here’s a link from the gallery. Thanks again for sending me down the rabbit hole of education.

Reminds me of Steve Martin:
Especially like 2-3-love the composition in Tintoretto paintjng 5, number 6 is very Interesting scene. Like the light in 8, Stom, and in 9.
13 gamba did an interesting portrait, wild colors, but effective, sharp lines help depict the thorns well. The gaze is compelling as is the gaze in 15 reni.
What an jnteresting way to decide to portray the mocking in 17.
Hoffman again shows the ugliness in the scene via distorted warped faces, twisted by evil. At least I think that is what he was trying to portray.
32 shows the personal hatred bubbling forth from the man jamming his thumb into Christ’s face. The hatred they had of Christ was Satanic
I enjoy reading your reactions, along with several other frequent contributors. I am an admitted art ignoramous, so your comments educate me.
Yes it does remind me of Steve Martin. That’s great.
Bosch is quite the trippy artist- love his works- Just now looking at ‘the last judgement- what a work- it’s chockerblock full of symbolism-
