Traditionally John is painted with his head resting on Jesus to indicate that he was "the one Jesus loved the most". I like this portrait by Corbert Gauthier. He is looking far away, remembering the times spent with the Master and trying to put his thoughts in writing. The chalice and the bread represent the Eucharist and the eagle is his attribute.

The writers of
The Chosen, I expect you'll recall, had some fun with John in the opening minutes of season two.
John says, "He loved me."
Mary said, "He loved all of you. You just feel the need to talk about it more."

I looked mostly at the tables. Most artists had western, modern tables. 5, 19, and Tissot and Blake had middle-eastern style banquets.
I know some people don’t like Blake, but I do.

I liked Blake showing Judas leaving with a loaf of bread.

I don't usually get too enthused about Blake's--I think his weird idiosyncratic style interferes with the content for me.
Today, though, I was preparing the crucifixion narrative, and I was quite taken by his portrayal of the soldiers gambling. That, and his Job and Daughters, are my favorites of his so far.

LOL! One of your funniest replies. It was my wife who introduced me to Blake. She has a large coffee table book which I read when we married.
He is pretty weird.

Supposedly he threw a paint pot at the Pope while painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
The Pope had come to complain that Michelangelo was over budget and past the finish date.
Michelangelo was angry because he didn’t want the job in the first place, telling the Pope that he was a sculptor and not a painter, but the Pope insisted and he finally gave in...............................

Yes, I've read The Agony and the Ecstasy and seen Chuck Heston's film portrayal.

Never saw other of those. Probably never will. Heston is persona non grata on TV except for his Moses during Easter/Passover season.............
