A few artists captured the evil expression of Salome; others went with the “innocent young lady” or “dumb blond” face.

Again, what seems an universal art-world symbol for John the Baptist – the staff with a small cross at the top – seems to have made the scene in many of these paintings. Does anyone know the origin of this, especially if it had a Biblical origin, or was it a church-led convention of symbolism?

Not having been imprisoned myself, I cannot testify to what extent he might just have blended right in with gen. pop.; but I suspect even among them, you're right. But I do know of a place where he might fit real well.

Let's just say that if God somehow is able to save him, it will rank with His Nebuchadnezzar class of rescues. As always, we'll be surprised whom we encounter in heaven, as will they.

As for your question about John the Baptist, I seem to recall that artists of the Italian Renaissance invented the symbol of the cross-staff which represents his special vocation to God.
