Seen in closeup as you've shown us, there is certainly no comparison between the two. It looks like the work of two different artists, as indeed it was: rank-and-file v. Hall of Fame.

Speaking of replacement artists: I expect you're aware, since even I am, of the horrendous results produced once or twice recently by obviously incompetent painting restorers. My six-year-old granddaughter could do as well. How do you account for that? Sabotage? Psychosis? Fraud? Mismanagement?

Yes, there have been a few horrors, notably in Spain. One, a 15th c. St. George has been turned into a carousel character. My great heartache has been the Black Madonna of Chartres. Gone is the beauty, the mystery, the sooth of the candles testimony of the passage of time, now she is just another fake statue that doesn’t invite prayer or meditation.

At least brains and photo albums retain memories and images.

First impression: why did so many artists portray Jesus as nude or near-nude? I was baptized as an adult at 18 and I wore clothing. The Jews were more modest than our society and probably wore their under tunic and some top garment too.

In the hot dry climate of the Holy Land, the clothing would dry quickly.

“#27, the only contribution by Leonardo is the little angel at left, one of the works of a beginner Leonardo. One can see already the mastery he achieved later.”

A quick glance shows the little angel has an expressive face and a natural, fluid posture. The folds in the clothing show his talent. The whole figure looks better than any of the other figures in the painting, IMO.

“Jesus is baptized in the very essence of God, into the waters of creation.”

I wondered if any of the artists would convey the tie to the creation of the world in Genesis 1.

“1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness [a]was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. “

Here we have the Trinity: God, The Spirit hovering over the waters, and the Word of God.

Note the parallel with the passage in Matthew:

“16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.””
