Good Morning, Dan! :-)
Very much like #4 by Alexander Ivanov. There is a lot happening here, the first appearance of Christ to people while John baptizes the people in the river Jordan. At right, an old man and a young boy emerge from the waters listening intently to the Baptist speaking. Simon is straining his ear to the words of the Baptist while Nathaniel, eyes downcast and arms crossed and hidden in the sleeves of his tunic, stands unmoved by the prophet’s words. The apostle John is next to a shivering boy.
On the right we see a group of people, their backs turned away from Christ, they represent those who are set in their ways, unable to change, immersed in the conflicts and doubts, in the passions that have always been part of human nature.
I like the placement of Christ. He seems to have come out of a misty light, out of the harmony of nature and heaven to join humanity on earth.
And of course, many beautiful stained glass windows.
Thanks for your faithful “keeping on” with the Bible in Paintings.
