I've already done the first thirty threads, and I am confident you are going to LOVE the New Testament.
Lots more where those came from!
I, too, am old enough to remember that peculiar ban. If nothing else, it certainly spoke of a reverence for Christ.
Jonathan Roumie is masterfully playing Jesus under Dallas' direction. Saw S2E1 twice last night.
If we are to think like the first-century hearers, we must recognize that the importance of the number fourteen is that it is a multiple of (that ever-so-important number) seven. Matthew is implying that the entire flow of God's history of creating a people for himself shows that Jesus the Christ is our Sabbath rest.
Forty-two, not Fourteen
Three sets of fourteen is six sets of seven. The operative number here is not really fourteen but forty-two. And no, forty-two is not the answer to life, the universe, and everything; actually it is the precursor to the one who is the meaning of everything. Jesus Christ is the seventh week of history; he is the completion and the culmination; he inaugurates the last days.
In the Lord Jesus, God's redemptive work comes to a rest. This does not mean that God becomes inert, but that that the finality and totality are invested in him, and history never moves beyond him, as he lives on in his indestructible life, ruling from on high.
I wonder if Douglas Adams knew this?
I didn't, and I wondered what happened 14 generations after the Messiah. Turns out the question is moot...
Are you planning of doing one from David to Mary? After all she is also a direct descendant of David, via Solomon’s brother Nathan.
Excellent presentation. Worth further study.
Blessings!
Matthew’s genealogy was selective in order to make his—and the Spirit’s—point, as becomes apparent by comparing its omissions against other biblical genealogies.
A true Bible study is incomplete without that, but I was amazed just to hear the Spirit's prompting to find genealogical art. More to your point: I feel constrained from making biblical arguments over and above simply illustrating; my few attempts have dissuaded me.
Further: I’ve always found it so delicious that God brought Mary through Nathan, named by David for the one who challenged him: “You are the man!”
Those are so beautiful. Thank you for alerting me to the resumption of your work. It’s so inspiring.
So glad of your enthusiasm. Plenty more to come!
Now move over to Luke's genealogy of Jesus. He split at David to Nathan's line and proceeded to "the son of Heli, the son of Joseph" in Luke 3:23. Back in Matthew we see Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. What is going on here? How can Heli and Jacob both be father to Joseph?
This brings us to a little discussed law that God gave to Moses back when the land of Canaan was to be divided up.
When we get to Heli, he had daughters only. He was the father of Mary. That takes us back to Numbers 27:1-7 and the daughters of Zelophehad. When Mary married Joseph he became the son of Heli by adoption into a family of girls. For practical purposes, Mary married her brother, but that’s the way the law made in Numbers 27 worked so daughters could own an inheritance. A family of girls only, could have an inheritance and the man they married was adopted by the dead father in law, in this case Heli. So legally, Joseph was the father of Jesus, but not by blood. God had maneuvered His way around the blood curse of Jechoniah, but Jesus was of the House and Lineage of David but it’s by a virgin birth and avoids the curse of Jechoniah. Who else but God could arrange this series of events? Jesus had to be of the House of David but couldn’t have any of Jechoniah's cursed blood.
Zedikiah was Jeconiah's uncle and was installed as a vassal king by Nebuchadnezzar who later blinded him and killed his sons and brought him to Babylon to die. He was the last king of Israel for thousands of years. All other leaders of Israel came from elsewhere.
For another work of God to keep the seed of the woman clean of Canaanite blood, check out Jacobs children's deaths and how Tamar carried the line forward as a prostitute and the line of Perez. This would make a great Soap Opera if you just change the names.
I meant to type Judah’s children but typed “Jacob”. In my last post. I had Jacob on my mind for some reason,....but I’m old.
Children's coloring books show Isaac as a young child and don't depict him as WILLINGLY following his fathers instruction. If Isaac was 33 years old, he could have easily resisted and defied Abraham.
It's a good thing we have eternity with Him, because that's exactly how long it will take us to apprehend all His works and glories.
In the reality of things, many Hebrews have missed their Messiah, and Gentiles have realized Jesus as Messiah. But Gentiles have missed the Torah. It is said that in the reign of Jesus for 1000 years He will teach us Torah on Mount Moriah. The more I read and teach the Old Testament, the more I see God weaving His story into every word and verse. Even the genealogies say hidden things that can be discerned by the meanings of their names. If the names were out of order, it would confuse the message. It convinces me more and more that God proved Himself in the writing of Scripture. Every jot and tittle is placed carefully in the place it needs to be to reveal His message to His people. The people that say "Men wrote the Bible" haven't read it.
DID ABRAHAM FORCE ISAAC ONTO THE ALTAR, OR DID HE PERSUADE HIM?
With few exceptions these artists portray Isaac as being only ten or twelve years old, subtly implying he was forced onto the sacrificial altar by his overbearing and overpowering father. I disagree. I suggest Isaac was strong and vigorous--certainly able to carry the wood!--who went willingly to his death because it was his father’s will.
As Jesus did. Abraham and Isaac are types--symbols--of the Father and Son. When we meet them in heaven, it will be not only Abraham's famous faith, but Isaac's also, we shall so admire. May we learn from and emulate them now!
Well said!
Good word! Thank you for remembering me; your threads were missed. My favorite painting today is "Abraham and the Stars"!
