All of our Romance languages assign gender to inanimate objects but of course not knowing Hebrew...

That's a great question, and I think Mr. Danny boy's answer has a great deal to do with it.
If nothing else, your question sent me into a whole round of study!
Things like women's ordination, even debates 100 years ago about 'what was appropriate dress for women', and more.
I can (kinda) give a pass to Eve for being deceived. The holy light of innocence having left her, what do you think Adam saw?
A naked Eve (that's why they hid after Adam chose to take a bite).
There's a seductive nature to sin, maybe that's why it's frequently (not always!) symbolized by a female. jmo

May I offer to both of you my very strongest recommendation to CS Lewis'
Perelandra, which he judged (to his biographer) as his best book--which is saying something! It is the second in his outer space trilogy.
The Bible records an extremely brief conversation between Eve and Satan, in which he steamrolls her completely. By contrast, Lewis invents a worthy adversary for Satan; this Eve parries him for TWENTY PAGES.
It is the finest, most thoughtful and inspiring writing I have ever encountered.

Perelandra is perhaps my favorite of CS Lewis’ space trilogy: ‘Out of the Silent Planet’, ‘Perelandra’, and ‘That Hideous Strength’ The first has a lot of evil in it, but good wins in the end. The second has mostly good things, but one character is a Satan avatar who tries to make the Venusian Eve fall—and fails. The third has the most evil and the most complete overcoming of it.

As I pointed out, Lewis considered Perelandra his best, but That Hideous Strength was his favorite. The latter's first sixty pages are so relentlessly evil, as you noted, that I nearly couldn't finish it.
