I thought I’d read someplace that medieval churches and such were sometimes linked by tunnels. I imagine if you sought sanctuary in one you could escape via the tunnels.

Others have seen this not that long ago as there are overhead pipes or conduit in one of the photos.

I have no clue about these exact tunnels but I understand that tunnels of a similar era in Wales and IIRC Cornwall have been identified to be of Templar origin.
This determination (or SWAG) has been made based on age, history and symbology found on tunnel walls.

People were short back then... But not ‘that’ short.
4’ tunnels typically means water or sewerage. So the archeological dig will likely reveal lot of sh*te.
