Even the modern trinity doctrine wasn't "official" until more than 3 centuries after Christ died...which means Christ and the apostles didn't know it, teach it, or believe it. Non sequitur. Whenever it became "official" has absolutely nothing to do with whether Christ and the apostles knew it. The nature of God is a pretty big deal. The fact that Christ didn't teach the trinity telling...it wasn't discussed, it wasn't thought of, it wasn't a thing. They KNEW the nature of God and it didn't look at all like the trinity of today.

To assume that the early church was in the dark is an assumption.

Very good point. The epistles in the New Testament weren't comprehensive instruction manuals. Most of the teaching was done by verbal means. And you're right, they knew the nature of God and they didn't need to repeat it in every written correspondence.
