Many Catholics (or former Catholics) have caused the greatest problem by leaving the Catholic faith and following the ways of the world and not the ways of Jesus.
While Luther and others were the instigators, too many Catholic have fallen away from the faith. Even some of the leadership have accepted sinful ways.
Both the Blessed Mother and Jesus have warned us and yet we ignored the warnings.
Let us pray ans ask both Blessed Mother and Jesus to continue to help guide us on the rough and narrow path.
The counterreformation gave some credence to Luther.
While I don’t see him as legitimate in any way (as he then forged his own religion, which primarily seemed concerned with the destination of his soul rather than those of all mankind), I can see a comparison to the situation today where priests with valid concerns are dismissed, marginalized, and silenced by a corrupt hierarchy.

This and other heresies are why you romans will enter the tribulation. Heresies like this is why all those folks 500 years ago read the Bible in their own language for the first time and left the roman church .
