The tithe was an old covenant requirement to help the Levitical priests survive in that the Levites were the only tribe of Israel without an inheritance. They were to survive from offerings of the other tribes of Israel.
Duet.18:1 “The priests, the Levites—all the tribe of Levi—shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and His portion.
