Indeed, all the historic clues including Koran descriptions and the orientations of the earliest mosques in both Asia and Africa all point to Petra. Mecca was nowhere in sight.

While Petra is an amazing place, why refer to Petra’s ruins as “islamic places”? Petra, and the Nabataeans who built it, predated Islam by a thousand years.
