Vatican Publishes New Book Reducing ‘Sin of Sodom’ to ‘Lack of Hospitality’

ROME, December 19, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — In what many see as an effort to normalize homosexuality in the Catholic Church, the Vatican has released a new book that reduces the “sin of Sodom” (Genesis 19:1–29) to “a lack of hospitality.”

“The story about the city of Sodom … illustrates a sin that consists in the lack of hospitality, with hostility and violence towards the stranger, a behavior judged to be very serious and therefore deserving to be sanctioned with the utmost severity,” the new book asserts.

Sources consulted by LifeSite described the book as “utter banality” and “obviously ridiculous.” One theologian exclaimed, “Thank God this stuff isn’t magisterial.”

The new volume, titled What Is Man? An Itinerary of Biblical Anthropology (Che cosa è l’uomo? Un itinerario di antropologia biblica), was released on December 16 by the Pontifical Biblical Commission (PBC) and endeavors to examine the scriptural understanding of the human person. Jesuit Father Pietro Bovati, secretary for the Pontifical Biblical Commission, said the work was carried out at the express wish of Pope Francis.

With a preface by Cardinal Luis Ladaria, S.J., prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and president of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, the volume is composed of four chapters: The human being created by God (ch. 1); The human being in the garden (ch. 2); The human family (ch. 3); and the human being in history (ch. 4).

Its 10-page treatment of homosexuality comes in chapter three, in a section entitled “transgressive ways” that also includes incest, adultery, and prostitution.

That - “lack of hospitality to strangers” - has been the “Christian” Left/Progressive & “New Age” theological line on the matter of Soddom & Gomorrah for a very long time. Until Francis the Roman Catholic Church never took that line. It is another point in Francis turning the Catholic Church over to...........????

The original point of reasons other than homosexuality being offered for the destruction of Sodom was because Sodom wasn’t unique in rampant buggery, and were cruel thieves and murderers as well.

See Ezekiel Chapter 16

Remember, God offered to save the cities if righteous people could be found.

God had already promised to destroy the cities in Gen 18:20, before the outrage at Lot’s house.

The Catholic Church is not the "Church of Satan" because *nobody* owns the Catholic Church except Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Your comment is like saying the Church founded upon the Apostles was a Satanic Church because they all either betrayed, denied, or abandoned Him --- except for one, John, who stayed at the foot of the Cross with Jesus' sorrowful mother.

Our calling is not to "leave" the Church, our calling is to "be" the Church.

Christ will reconcile the rest of His Own in the tears of repentance and the gift of His cleansing Blood, and the glory of His salvation: at the time of His choosing. And our salvation is closer now, than when we first believed.

I bet the first time you heard about this "Sodom's sin= inhospitality" thing, would have been the first time you read the Bible:
"Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."(Ezekiel 16:49, KJV)

"Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy."NIV and other translations (LINK)

This is not to say sodomy (legally defined in many places, including historically in my state of TN, as "oral or anal copulation with a man, a woman or an animal") was not the most revolting abomination, but that all these other sins were there, mutually corrupting and tending toward the same end: serving one's own purposes , not God's.

I've read that it was a commonplace in Christian preaching in centuries past, to group the three sins of "Luxury, Usury and Sodomy" to characterize an appetite-driven, self-serving, ungodly life.

Hat tip to you, Some Guy. You are a perceptive reader.

The Catholic Church is not the "Church of Satan" because *nobody* owns the Catholic Church except Jesus Christ Our Lord.

If by "Catholic" you mean the body of believers in Christ, and Christ alone, then you are correct and Satan cannot own the ekklesia.

However, if by "catholic" you mean the Roman Catholic church, and there is a difference, then there can be Satanic infiltration in that denomination. And from what is posted in the article that does indeed appear to be the case.

Your comment is like saying the Church founded upon the Apostles was a Satanic Church because they all either betrayed, denied, or abandoned Him --- except for one, John, who stayed at the foot of the Cross with Jesus' sorrowful mother.

A couple of clarifications and corrections:

All the disciples abandoned Him at the time of His arrest.

56“But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled. Matthew 26:56 NASB

The ekklesia is built upon:

18for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household,

20having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone,

21in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. Ephesians 2:18-22 NASB

The Church Victorious in heaven is utterly spotless, because in heaven we are purified and past any possibility of change. However, the Church Militant on earth is in the realm of time and change: some advancing and some lagging, some gaining victories over sin as they go forward in Christ, and some lapsing back into sin as they neglect the command to persevere.

As a visible, God-ordained body, a parish or congregation or other "institutional" ekklesia will be very much this sort of mixture. This should sadden us all but should surprise nobody.

As for St. John, we don't actually know if he panicked and dashed off with the others or not--- possibly he just went to get Jesus' mother --- but either way, he must have returned promptly, because we know he was there with Mary, at the Lord's crucifixion to the end. At that point, the Church Loyal was indeed very small at the foot of the Cross: very small.

Well, sure.

But Ezekiel's point of view is there, as well. As Scripture commenting on Scripture, it does not deny the unnatural-sex-sodomy part, but places it in a wider, deeper context: the sin of living only for your own satisfaction, disregarding others, "screw you," a bit of sodomy in everything you do.

True. Really when one gets right down to it homosexuality in a way is the ultimate in narcissism.

Well, yes we do know based on Scripture....ALL the disciples fled Him.

Mark records this as does John.

And they all forsook him, and fled… Mark 14:50-52

Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. John 16:32

--- possibly he just went to get Jesus' mother

possible but doubtful considering the hour.

--- but either way, he must have returned promptly, because we know he was there with Mary, at the Lord's crucifixion to the end. At that point, the Church Loyal was indeed very small at the foot of the Cross: very small.

This is correct. John was at the Cross.

As I said....some were corrections and some were clarifications.

Scripture does indeed say *all* the disciples fled. It doesn't say where or why. I'm supposing that one "fled" to commit suicide (Judas); ten *fled* in personal cowardice, not intending to return (though Peter did creep back to the courtyard, only to let himself be intimidated by a servant girl. A servant girl!!) and one (John) "fled" intending to return: he was last seen with Mary at the foot of the Cross.

I'm entitled to that opinion-- just a supposal--- because it does not contradict the known facts, and the text itself does not go into further detail. John does seem to have been closer to Jesus than the others: being known as the "beloved" one.

I was under the impression that the sin of those cities was being utterly evil through and through

They were, but the capstone of their moral declension which flowed from idolatry was that of a sin of fundamental perversity.

And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; (Genesis 18:20)

Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good. (Ezekiel 16:49-50)

Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (Jude 7)

Scripture upon Scripture...

That passage was describing the sin of Samaria and judah rhetorically called Sodom. Sodoms sin was sexual immorality. Israel’s sin was spiritual immorality.
