Prayer for all those experiencing difficulties this Christmas.

This Christmas has been extraordinarily difficult for people that have lost...

valuable items, money, friends, homes, cars, loved ones, beloved pets...

If you have lost something recently please let us know. You don't have to say what it is if you don't want to but we will all be praying for your recovery and healing from your loss no matter how big or small.

The most important thing is that we do not lose hope especially as we contemplate the joy of Christmas and our Lord's promise of Salvation.

My mother is so tied to that business she can hardly get to the store for groceries sometimes. It is insane to not have AC in southern Wisconsin.
I grew up without it but now I’d never be able to stand it.

My father was born and spent part of his childhood in Southern Wisconsin. Can you divulge whereabouts ?

About 20 miles south of Madison which is the notorious liberal capital city.

Not far at all. Had a lot of family in Waukesha County going back to the mid-19th century.

Ah, Waukesha County is on my way to see my friend near Milwaukee.
The real test of Wisconsin knowledge is , who can spell this city, and some natives can’t.

Oconomowoc

that might be in Waukesha County!

My aunt who passed on in her sleep lived there many years.

Holy fudge, that’s the very town where my father lived as a kid ! I visited there several times in the ‘70s and ‘80s. My family were early settlers (1840s) in the nearby community of Wales (and you can guess where they came from). Some distant cousins still reside in Oconomowoc (Dousman). Are we actually related for real ? :-P

I know all those towns!
I visited her there in the 80s and up to several years ago.
We all hailed from way south in Illinois though.
Chicago Land suburbs is where my family was from before heading to WI when I was about 4.
More relatives followed, until a whole lot of them were here.
Freepers are a family too though!

: )

My grand aunt and uncle owned a large spread just south of the interstate in Oconomowoc. We visited her up until just before her death in 1989 (at 89). Another side of the family also was from Southern Illinois. My GGG-grandfather was the son-in-law of one of IL’s Founding Fathers. He lived in Edwards County (which at the time extended all the way to the Wisconsin Border & included Chicago, though there wasn’t much there at the time !).

There is lots of development on both sides of the interstate now. I hope your aunt and uncle got a good price for their farm. My grandparents got enough to retire on when they sold their farm in Lombard, Illinois. Way back around 1968.

I think they sold off part of it. How much, I’m not sure, but that was probably before the 1970s. But the house and a decent chunk of farmland was still in the family’s hands after the death of my grand-aunt. They may still have it today 30 years later. We didn’t have much if any contact with her grandchildren, they were not exactly “nice” people (greedy).

My grand-aunt was a very nice lady, but I think the grandchildren held her responsible for the fact their dad was a drunk (which had to do with his poor choices, not her). I remember the second year we went up for the family reunion (1980), the son, who was then just 50, had apparently dropped dead in the kitchen from a heart attack. I don’t remember having met him despite it having been a “family” reunion (I don’t think the kids, who were maybe around 20 years old, were there, either, despite living nearby).

Within 5 years, the “kids” punted their grandmother out of her house (despite having all her faculties) and stuck her in that Dousman nursing home. The nursing home did not take good care of her and allowed her teeth to rot out and she went blind. Frankly, had we known the situation in hindsight, we might’ve brought her down here to Tennessee to stay with us if at all possible.

We saw her the one last time before her death. My parents couldn’t find her in the nursing home — but I did. She had physically deteriorated so much she almost looked like a man, and I picked her out right away because she looked almost exactly like her little brother, that being my late grandfather (imagine my shock, almost 9 years after he died, to see the spitting image of my late grandfather sitting in a wheelchair !).

What was alarming is that with all that physical deterioration (and she was about 89, though looked over 100) her faculties were ALL there. She didn’t once complain about the situation. Pushed her around in her wheelchair outside in the fall leaves of October, which she sadly couldn’t see (or perhaps just barely). My father wanted to take a photo, but I told him (and although she wouldn’t say as much) that she wouldn’t want to be remembered like that. She passed away perhaps a month or so later.

As an aside, when we used to visit there in Oconomowoc, we used to go eat at the nearby Silver Lake Supper Club. Did you ever go there for a meal ? We stayed at the Olympic Resort a few times as well.

If the supper club is downtown I may have been there with my aunt a long time ago.

Never stayed at Olympic but you sure can see that hill from a long way off.

My aunt loved Oconomowoc and was there at least 30 years.

She was a sweet kind hearted woman.

Her son and his wife bought her home , it’s on the east side of 67 a mile or so north of 94. Set back in a quiet neighborhood. Little ranch house.

Gee Sorry your great aunt had crummy relatives. So sad when the elders are treated so badly. I always loved and respected my elders. Miss those great old folks.

No, the supper club was on the south side of Silver Lake, about 2-3 miles south of downtown Oconomowoc as the crow flies. I think one reason we ate there is because it was the closest restaurant to my grand-aunt’s house.

I can show you a pic of the house right off of Google:

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0534426,-88.4842875,3a,47.8y,285.19h,82.8t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssz5LZLvPPZt59w5quN46sA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

It’s remarkable that suburbanization has not overtaken it, yet. An old farm house with the old barns still adjacent on the right. They used to have an old pony out in the front in the grassy area on the right in front of the one barn. I kinda wished they had the property on the lake across the street to go swimming.

My father grew up for a time (’40s) in a home near downtown. They were forced to move in 1949 because my father had severe asthma and the doctor “ordered” the family to relocate to the Southwest and a sanitarium/clinic in Silver City, New Mexico. That seemed to do the trick, since he’s still alive today 70 years later (and probably healthier than I am). 2-3 hour walks in the long driveway every morning, hot or cold. Push-ups, sit-ups, etc. ;-)

I love old farm houses like that. There is so much building going on there. Seems to be a thriving area. Went shopping downtown with auntie a few times. Nice town.
