Joshua Harris made the right decision, here’s why

If we had more Joshua Harrises, progressive Christianity would cease to exist.

If you’re in the know, lately there has been quite the buzz around Joshua Harris and his departing from the Christian faith. Most famous for his book, I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Harris has unintentionally fashioned himself in the image of a puritan since that point.

Despite the saddening news of his loss of faith, I do commend him, as we all should. I wish it were not so that Harris lost sight of his first love, Christ. The circumstances and trials that brought him to this point must have been burdensome. Christian, do not be too hard on Harris, for one does not know where one will stand after passing through the furnace of God’s testing.

It’s when we dare to challenge our beliefs and ask the hard questions that we start to grow closer or further away from God. In hard times our faith is tested. When we look at the suffering of orphans in third world countries, when we look at a widow crying at the grave site we can be tempted to ask God; where is your sovereignty?

In these fiery trials we find if we’ve been building a house of gold or a house of sticks which will be destroyed in the consuming fire of a just God.

The reason I commend Harris is how he handled his departing. As I mentioned in my last article, A Warning Against Progressive Christianity, the progressive Church is full of those who made the same journey as Harris. The main difference between Harris and the progressive Christian is one denounced God and left the faith, the other molded God into the god they wanted, thus making an idol.

Harris also left his wife, right? And one of his big issues is LGBT?

So....basically Harris is gay?

I guess that’s what happens when you work closely with alleged pedo-protector CJ Mahaney for too long

The WRONG decisions:

1. To abandon his wife
2. To celebrate the homosexual lifestyle
3. To reject Jesus Christ.

The RIGHT decision : NOT to pretend by staying as a Pastor or identifying as a Christian (like so many Pastors who think like him are doing).

My guess is he will eventually come out as gay. His first public appearance after his announcement was to march in a Canadian gay pride parade.

The reason I commend Harris is how he handled his departing.

"How he handled" is by being all passive-aggressive drama queen. Maybe it was unavoidable.

Don't know that yet.

And if he turns out to be that way, I'd just note it as a data point.

Despite the saddening news of his loss of faith, I do commend him, as we all should.” No we should not. If he lost his faith in Christ, he was never a Christian to begin with. This is secular drivel.

lol....look at the picture of him at the pride parade in the story that I posted

Ok...”maybe” he’s not gay. But....he’s at the pride parade and he looks really, really, really, really gay.

But yah. I guess we don’t “know” that.

Oh, I agree. The pics of him, and how he presents himself, on his own website, all trip my "Hmmmm" filter. Dunno, maybe it's just west coast hipster.

I don’t commend his obvious interest in influencing as many as possible to go to hell with him.

He did not apostacize quietly. He seems to want company.

It is better to be hot or cold, rather than lukewarm.

Other than that, I dispute the underlying tenor of the article.

In my experience, those who commend others on doubting their faith are themselves (so-called) progressives.

That is the sort of sophistry I have heard from devotees of Fuller Heresy Factory (”A true faith is a doubting faith,” as one such told me), going back decades.

Joshua Harris was a legalist, which is why I rejected his ostensible ministry when I first encountered it; he was a modern-day Bill Gothard, whose ministry I also rejected in the early 1970s (although it took decades for the corruption in his organization to come to light).

He then went on to become a full-blown heretic. I am not going to commend someone who created a ministry to satisfy his ego, so that he could mislead thousands of people for many years.

Biblical morality and sanctification are hardly admonished from the pulpit today. It was because I was looking for such that I discovered his book on dating. However, a cursory perusal quickly convinced me it was not in fact Biblical.

Bottom line: Joshua Harris was a false teacher who abused and then betrayed people who regrettably followed his leading.

Not at all. The author is commending Harris for his intellectual honesty, not his unbelief. He could have followed the "progressive" Christians and dishonestly claimed the Bible doesn't say what it obviously says about God's design for human sexuality. Instead, he was honest and said he no longer believes the Bible.

You are quite right....and so many “Christian” leaders in the homeschool world were super legalistic, which is as you note, inherently abusive (not to mention false).
