In Captains Courageous, with Spencer Tracey, Freddy Batholomew is a blowhard millionaire's son who is socially, poorly adjusted. He uses his father's incredible wealth, to bully his classmates and even his teacher, but he's roundly disliked, and ostracized. While on an ocean liner, he unsuccessfully tries to impress some other boys by eating 5 ice cream sodas. When he has to throw up, to escape the mocking boys, he runs into a lifeboat area to evade their ridicule while purging his overindulgence, and manages to fall overboard into the ocean.
Instances of people falling overboard into the open ocean are rather commonly reported in the news. Usually they are lost, but if by chance their accidents are observed and a life-preserver is thrown to them, is that the end of the story, do we just say, "oh, well, you have a floatation device, you're okay now"?
No, we have to pull them in. The life-preserver, the lifesaver, is only part of the formula for saving their lives. There is also a rope, which must be attached to the life-preserver, and must be used to finally accomplish their salvation.
Jesus Christ is the one mediator between God and man. But on the man side of the equation, unlike the radical individuality most typified by J.J. Rousseau, we who life the life of Christians do so in communities. But even then, we do not abide as atomistic individualists. We live our Jesus-oriented life in relation to our fellows. "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." Hebrews 10:25.
Jesus' first disciple was his mother, who gave us the total account of his early life and who "treasured these things up in her heart". "A sword will pierce your own soul too, so that the secret thoughts of many hearts might be revealed". On the cross, he gave his mother to John to take in his home, but when you take your master's mother, she takes care of you.
Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple; and there were flashes of lightning, voices, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail. And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery.
And another portent appeared in heaven; behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems upon his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she brought it forth; she brought forth a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which to be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had borne the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river which the dragon had poured from his mouth. Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. - Rev 11:19 -- 12:17
She forms the body of Christ. She schools her son's disciples. Those who won't attend her school, remain ignorant.
We are in a time when any merely human institution would be washed away. Our churches are going under the shadow of a new Heresy of Ba'al of Peor, as when the Hebrew people were successfully attacked and overwhelmed through human sexuality. Our churches are now pro-gay and as soon as the civil authority authorizes child sex, they will be indistinguishable from the denizens of the town of Sodom: "Bring them out that we may know them".
Jesus' mother forms the few of the elect who will resist being fooled by the great apostasy. Those who will not avail themselves of the lifeline of Mary, will be lost.
The Catholics have unity in the dogma of the faith. There is one dogma for Catholics; the same can't be said for the Protestants.
No it didn't. They aren't a part of the infallible teachings of the Church except under certain criteria. The article said encyclicals remain "very important teaching documents" not that they are official teachings of the Church. You are proving why we shouldn't listen to you regarding what the Church teaches.
Oh man....now that's funny! I needed a good laugh for this Monday.
Roman Catholics unity in dogma! LOL!
Keep'em coming al...keep'em coming.
trying to decipher how a very important teaching document is not part of the teaching of your church I guess its another one of those things you have to be catholic to understand...
Please provide an "approved" list of encyclicals.
There is one set of dogma for the Catholic Church. Catholics can dispute them and challenge them, as Catholic theologians do all the time, but they remain as one.
Likely this.......

Not follow Mary, nor follow Catholicism, nor follow the pope, but Jesus.
LOL....ya'll can't even tell us how many ex-cathedra statements have been made by a pope or which of the encyclicals are dogmatic.
Oh, V1 and V2 Roman Catholics will disagree with you.
IF we have to follow Mary.....seems like an awful big requirement to leave out.
And your point is?
Because that verse in no way negates the statement made.
Mother of my LORD - kurios, is not the same word for God which is "theos".
You cannot justify the corruption of God breathed, Holy Spirit inspired Scripture with that verse and that mistranslation.
That's why you shouldn't be claiming what Catholics teach or believe. It's not so difficult though. Maybe this will help. Protestant disputes, regarding the real presence in the Eucharist for example, can be teaching documents for the Church (note that doesn't mean they are teachings of the Church) because the opposing conclusions of the dispute demonstrate the error of Sola Scripture.
All born again believers are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
That argument from Catholicism falls flat as well.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Kinda makes you wonder why the people Jesus touched or who touched Him survived.
Or was Mary more pure and holy than Jesus?
Oh trust me. Protestants have already figured out how to learn from your mistakes. As for claiming what catholics teach or believe, we have used your words or official documents for evidence and you still state we don’t know what you believe. You fromans are arguing with your own church and members, not us.
So? What about the fact that the EO and Rome are split on matters of significant doctrinal dispute.
Must mean that the claimed authority of Catholicism isn't so supreme either.
The irony is lost. Fromans can argue both sides of an argument and then tell us we are the ones that are confused with a straight face...
That's not true. And your lame attacks on the Church aren't doing anything to make the case for Sola Scripture (a tradition of man). It is only a diversion from my original comment.
Yeah, sure they do.....
These are the differences between them and Roman Catholicism. These differences are so important that there has been no reconciliation in nearly a thousand years after the split. The Eastern Orthodox differ with Roman Catholicism on these issues:
The Holy Spirit (the filioque)
In EO - The third person of the Trinity, proceeding from the Father alone as in the original Nicene Creed. The Father sends the Spirit at the intercession of the Son. The Son is therefore an agent only in the procession of the Spirit.
In RC - 'When the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, He is not separated from the Father, He is not separated from the Son'.
Mary - Assumption and Immaculate conception of
EO - The Assumption is accepted and it is agreed that Mary experienced physical death, but the Immaculate conception is rejected. Orthodox belief is that the guilt of original sin is not transmitted from one generation to the next, thus obviating the need for Mary to be sinless.
RC - Both are dogmas of the church. The church has not as yet decided whether Mary actually experienced Physical death. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception states that Mary, was at conception 'preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin' and should not be confused with the virgin birth.
Pope - Authority of
EO - As the Bishop of Rome, he has a primacy of honour when Orthodox, not of jurisdiction. At present, his primacy is not effective as the papacy needs to be reformed in accordance with Orthodoxy. His authority is thus no greater or lesser than any of his fellow Bishops in the church.
RC - The Pope is the 'Vicar of Christ' i.e. the visible head of the church on earth and spiritual successor of St. Peter. He has supreme authority (including that over church councils) within Christendom (The Power of the keys).
Pope - Infallibility of
EO - Papal Infallibility is rejected. The Holy Spirit acts to guide the church into truth through (for example) ecumenical councils. This Orthodoxy recognises the first seven ecumenical councils (325-787) as being infallible.
RC - The Pope is infallible when, through the Holy Spirit, he defines a doctrine on faith and morals that is to be held by the whole church. This is a dogma and is therefore a required belief within Catholicism.
Purgatory
EO - An intermediate state between earth and heaven is recognised, but cleansing and purification occur in this life, not the next.
RC - A place of cleansing and preparation for heaven. Also a place where the punishment due to unremitted venial sins may be expiated.
I'd say these were the "biggies", but other differences also exist. These are explained here.
Not this again? How many times do we have to go through this? The Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox are not in communion. They have differences in doctrine. When I am talking about the Catholic Church, which includes the Eastern Catholics (not just the Roman Catholics), I am referring to the Catholics in communion under the Pope. Get it?
Who has two thumbs and doesn’t care about your little tantrum because he took away one of your favorite talking points?
This guy!
