After 11 years my theory is that they are too embarrassed to admit it is kind of grotesque and crude looking so they are using this Catholic excuse. The funniest and saddest thing is that it probably winds up being inflicted on some Catholic church, right?

Good point there. No need to theologize taste. We dont want that statue because were going for a different look - thats all theyd have needed to say. But, apparently someone at the Catholic News Agency heard about it and posted an article to ridicule Baptists and it got reposted here for probably the same reason.
