Crucifixes with the body of Christ, and crosses without the body of Christ, are both legitimate. Catholics use both.
The mistake comes in when somebody imputes motives which are not there.
"You put Christ's body on the crucifix because you think He's still hanging there!"
(False)
"You display a bare cross because you think the instrument of torture is more important than the person!"
(False)

Okay. But when I look at a cross, I have NEVER thought the "instrument of torture is more important" than Jesus. We could both agree, I think, that a nice, smooth post and lintel is nowhere near what that device really looked like. On the other hand, when I look at a crucifix with the tortured Jesus still limply hanging from it, I think don't "they" know that He is no longer there? I know Catholicism teaches the resurrection and it's critical part in the Christian faith, so I don't get the reason for a crucifix display.
So, I ask again - not to be cantankerous - why display a crucifix?
