Parish Priest Breaks the Silence, Shares that He is Gay

'I am weary with holding it in'

For years now, I have been carrying a heavy burden, a secret cloaked in silence that the leaders of my church have not wanted me to share publicly. Each time I had a great desire to speak out I was challenged by other priests and leaders.

"Shhhh … be quiet."

"Keep it to yourself."

"Don't say a word to anyone."

"If you don't keep quiet, you will be thrown out of here."

"If you make it known publicly, it will hurt your ministry."

Then I recall the personal struggles of the prophet Jeremiah who desperately wanted to keep the Word of God to himself because it provoked such a negative response from those who heard his preaching. No matter how much he did not want to speak in the name of the Lord anymore, he could not hold it in. "There is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot" (Jeremiah 20:9). Jeremiah understands the anguish of preaching; however, keeping silent and not speaking the truth comes with an even greater cost. What a trap!

Today, I break the silence and emerge free from the shackles of shame placed upon me at a young age. There is so much to speak about, to repair and to heal — much beyond the limits of these words in print.

I am gay.

Driven to silence, hiding, being straight

Since my days in high school seminary in the 1980s, I was taught that homosexuality was something disordered, unspeakable and something to be punished. Friends with "particular friendships" were immediately removed from the school due to "family problems." During my senior year, a friar led an inquisition seeking to identify......

Why on earth would you post garbage like that?

You are as bad as the hardcore feminists who think that all men are rapists.

Grow up.

Hey, why not? The Vatican tolerates gay drug-fueled sex parties with no consequences and an acceptance of gay Vatican employees.

Rotting from the top down.

Because all gay men are attracted to boys. I’ve read story after story of boys left in the company of gay men and they end being sodomized.

I think that most priests have to deal with sexual temptations of one sort or another—not just gay priests. If so, then they have to resist the temptations, or confess their sins if they fail in any way or degree to do so.

How does he know he’s gay except that he lusts after other men??? To think it is to do it..

Uh-huh. Then the next time they ‘pass the plate,’
I’m only going to THINK about putting something in it.
Seems legit.

What an abomination to compare his homosexual desire to the prophet Jeremiah’s burning desire to give out the word of God that the Spirit has put in his heart.

That man’s homosexual desires cannot even begin to be compared to that. He’s not making a martyr of himself, no matter how hared he tries.

Besides, I thought the Catholic church didn’t allow for homosexual clergy.

Rule #1 should be “No Poofters!”

And I’ve read story after story about women being raped by straight men.

Get it?

Just because you read about the offenders doesn’t mean all are offenders. The press doesn’t bother writing about non-offenders.

I'm actually a little confused about this priest. He doesn't say or imply that he's ever had sex, or that he isn't celibate and chaste.

On the other hand, he does not clearly affirm that he is celibate and chaste.

He doesn't define what he means by "gay." In the past, he's had secret crushes on guys? Or: he's got a roving eye for guys right now?

Or not?

I don't think a homosexual plagued with unsettling lusty drives should be a seminarian. But then, with a heterosexual thrown off-balance by besetting lusts, I'd say the same.

He still needs to acknowledge the need for purity in thought, word and deed. This is not just necessary for him. It's necessary for all of us.

Are we allowed to talk about "purity"?

The only way Fr. Greiten could be a "role model" for others, is if he is fully committed to living out his vow of chaste celibacy, and proposing that as a moral course for others, in conformity with Divine and Natural Law.

I don´t see from the article that either Fr. Greiten or Archbishop Listecki said anything about celibacy or chastity.

And if this is so, they are false shepherds, leading others to the painful consequences of their error.

Isn’t a priest supposed to be celibate?

An impossible question to answer, since the article went to great pains to conceal the religion or denomination of the undefined "priest."

If that is a Roman Catholic Priest, he is an oxymoron.

A celibate gay person can be a priest, but "coming out" casts doubts about the celibacy sincerity.

If he isn’t already committing homosexual acts then he isn’t “gay”.

Shout it loud, shout it proud, I would rather that they all come out from the shadows and let the parishioners decide. Of course ever major religion that has embraced their gayness has seen a reduction in attendance.

I assume he means he is a behaviorally active homosexual.

His Bishop should suspend him from his duties.

I don’t recall the process for “defrocking”.

Does that mean he likes men, or boys?

Since both men and boys are male, the attraction to either by another male makes that male a homosexual.

Science.

Who cares if he has homosexual tendencies??? As long as he obeys his vow of celibacy and God’s admonition against having ANY sexual contact, then why even tell anyone? It’s not some “burden” that you simply MUST blurt out to everyone you have a disordered sexual preference. He’s doing it for attention and his overseer was right to tell him to keep it to himself. Now, he has forever changed whatever ministry he might have had with adults or children. He has invited the uncomfortable feelings others will now have towards him because he announced something that is nobody’s business as long as he remains celibate. If anything, he has drawn a target on his own back as his superiors will have to watch him like a hawk to be sure he stays faithful to God. Dummy!

This is really why no one is allowed to say anything negative, iow truthful, about homosexuality.

They have always preyed on the young.

Plus...it’s disgusting that he thinks he compares with Jeremiah the prophet in this! It’s no comparison at all.
