Archbishop of Canterbury Warns Churches Must Learn to Embrace Complex Modern Families

The Archbishop of Canterbury yesterday warned that churches must learn to live with a world in which families are no longer led only by married couples.

Even Church of England schools are now filled with children from ‘myriad combinations’ of men, women and children, the Most Reverend Justin Welby said.

In a speech that pointed at a fresh direction for the Church’s attitude towards marriage, the Archbishop said that ‘in the last 40 years there has been a great shift in the understanding and the reality of family life’.

He threw his support behind the idea that different forms of families can provide a stable home, adding: ‘The family, however it is experienced, is the place where we can be at our strongest and most secure.’

Last night his intervention provoked protests from evangelicals and social conservatives, who said the Church should be standing up for marriage.

Archbishop Welby offered his view on the modern understanding of family life in a lecture during a visit to Christian leaders in Moscow.

‘It is easy to define what makes up the family very narrowly,’ he said. ‘It is also easy to base ideas and ideals about the family on one’s own experience.

'The reality is that family life is and always has been complex. Parish priests up and down the country tell me about their experience in the primary schools in their parishes where children are brought up in myriad combinations of family.’

He added that the majority of Britons now see gay marriage as unchallengeable, yet the Church has failed to keep up.

This, coming from the same cretin who stated he can’t understand why Christians would support Trump.

“Narrow”

I have pet dogs, that doesn’t mean that God allows me to marry one.

The news site has stopped accepting comments. I wonder why.

Ever hear of preaching the Law, which requires that followers of Jesus try to live according to God’s Commandments even though we often fail? Christians are in the world, but they are not “of the world.” The world does not set the standard for how we lead our lives. God’s Word does.

The Anglicans in Africa, South America, and Asia need to split. I know that the Anglicans in Africa, especially in Nigeria, are not pleased about the garbage spewed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. They tend to be more theologically conservative.

Well, what do you expect from a church whose only reason for being was to accommodate an adulterous king.

Not sure what his point is. Of course, families come in all combinations— they always have. Some a lot more than others thank god. It is the mission of the church to welcome sinners with the gospel and yet uphold the law and Christian virtues. No contradiction between law and gospel, just human ineptitude.

Empty churches; Standing for nothing.
Could there be a connection?
The Archbishop thinks not.

Yet further abandonment of Christian moral teachings by the C of E. But unfortunately under Pope Francis, we RCs are following down the same slippery slope to perdition.

Ask him if Jesus Christ is his Lord and Savior.

Then, ask him if God hates all sin but loves the sinner.

Then, ask him if homosexuality is a sin.

That ought to shut him up, or at least get him stammering.

Well, what do you expect from a church whose only reason for being was to accommodate an adulterous king.

Yea, that's as bad as a church that has enabled, empowered and shrouded perverts and pedophile priests for centuries.

Let's see... require all so-called priests to be celibate and then give them access to young children. What type of people would gravitate to that environment? /s

Your church is rotten with perverts from the top down. A criticism of the adulterous Henry VIII is fair but you need to take the mote out of your own (Catholic church) eye.
