What God says stands in authority to anything written by men.
Read the Scriptures and you will know Truth and its many imitators.
Everyone from Masons to Mormons draw from Scripture, but you simply do not determine how the NT church understood the OT or even the gospels but simply looking at them, but by examination of the only wholly inspired substantive record of it - Acts thru Revelation.
In which we told that the New Covenant was not according to the Old, and how it basically differs, and see neither a separate sacerdotal priesthood called by the distinctive word for such, or other Catholic distinctives .
