CNN)Bishop Eddie Long, the controversial leader of one of the nation's largest megachurches, has died, according to the suburban Atlanta church he presided over. He was 63. Long died after a battle with an aggressive form of cancer, according to a statement by the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

Long was a national figure and one of the most innovative and polarizing pastors in the contemporary church. He was also a paradox. He was a preacher who led an infamous march against same-sex marriage and denounced homosexuality, but he also settled a lawsuit by four young men who said he pressured them into sexual relationships.

Young death suggests aids related issues. I don’t know of course, but the court settlement also suggests it.

Pretty young guy, as such things go these days. May the Lord have mercy on his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed.

I’d never heard of this fellow. Maybe having the word “die” in the center of his name was a bad omen for a preacher.

In any case, I agree, may the Lord have mercy on his soul. We could all use mercy, so why not him too.

I remember reading about the accusations of sex with young men, and about some of the stories of luxurious living.

Clearly, he was no St. Francis, but God sees the big picture and offers salvation far beyond what we deserve.

People will be surprised at how it all shakes out.

Looking forward to an Elvis revival myself.

The actress Dolores Hart, who did two movies with Elvis and is now Mother Dolores Hart, Abbess of Regina Laude, Upnorth somewhere, said Elvis was a very spiritual man.

When they worked together, he would read the Bible, and then they would talk about it. She said he was polite and kind, and always called her “Miss Dolores.”

The world caught him, but she didn’t think it reeled him in.

I'm somewhat partial to the potential extreme irony regarding the idolatrous Elvis cult culture.

He's "The King", so where else would he call home? ;)

Hear that? We're all "infamous" now!

Tomorrow it will be "infamous" to oppose pedophilia, bestiality, and necrophilia.

"Mega-church" pastors are always at risk of corruption, not by virtue of being pastor over such assets and people, but by the very process engaged in to become a mega-church. It is largely no different than the business world, with just as much avarice and power thirst.

Incidentally, the suit Long is wearing in the photo says it all. I wouldn't trust him with anyone.

For every soul this guy might have saved, he probably made ten more even more cynical about Christianity.

No pastor saves souls. God saves souls. Rev. Long was probably the means by which some found salvation through Christ. And, as you say, his example probably directed some away.

I’m not very sympathetic to that, I have to say. Every human being is always going to disappoint. That’s the difference between God and us.
