Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Asaph was King David's "Music Director", "Chief Musician", and what is now commonly known as the "Worship Leader". He served during the Years that there was no Temple yet, at the "Tent of Meeting" in Gibeon, and then in Jerusalem, and even after during the reign of King Solomon. He was a Levite, and his father Berekiah was appointed Doorkeeper of the Ark. It is theorized that Asaph wrote much of the music that was used in the Temple Service, and set many of David's Psalms to music as well. Twelve of the Psalms are attributed to him directly.

Being in the position of Music Director is a great honor, but it comes with the down side of being right in the middle of the "politics" of running a house of worship. Personalities, rivalries, disagreements, artistic differences, and other unfortunate dilemmas can put a strain on the person with this office. Asaph remained Music Director in the Temple of King Solomon, and was privy to the intrigues and scandals of the court. He saw Solomon's decline into idolatry and immorality, and it is theorized that Asaph's own brother, Zachariah, was murdered by Solomon's agents.

This Psalm starts out as a "Lament", mourning over the seemingly successful lives of wicked people. Asaph is understandably upset and disillusioned by the goings-on around him, and is genuinely hurt and disgusted by the evil that he sees.

It is necessary to take this "Lament" to its conclusion, though, as Asaph knows in his heart that God will work everything out for Good. The Lament turns into a Song of Praise, Trust, and Reassurance.

I have been a Music Director off and on for over 35 years, in a number of different churches. I have always been honored to hold these positions, but it has not always been easy. I really love Asaph, and am going to do more study about this unsung hero of the Bible!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

God Bless America!

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.
