Does God Have a Preference in the Presidential Race?
The Christian Diarist ^ | November 6, 2016 | JP

I went to the polls yesterday, casting an early vote against Hillary Clinton. It really was little more than a symbolic vote inasmuch as I reside in California, where Madam Clinton enjoys a 20-point lead, according to a Field Poll released last week.

Indeed, if the Whore of Babylon herself was the Democrat Party’s presidential nominee, she’d very likely win the not-so-Golden State’s 55 electoral votes on Tuesday.

That is why this Christ follower trembles for his country, in the words of Thomas Jefferson. Because I believe a Hillary Clinton presidency will move America even further away from God than it is today.

Though Madam Clinton is a professed Methodist, her views are in opposition to the United Methodist Church.

For instance, she thinks homosexuality acceptable in the eyes of God. Yet, the United Methodist Church declares: “The practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.” She also thinks the Almighty is okay with abortion. But the United Methodist Church disapproves of abortion because of its “belief in the sanctity of unborn human life.”

Little wonder, then, that 43 percent of Americans perceive that Madam Clinton is not truly religious, according to a January 2016 Pew Poll. It was avowed “Christians” like her that the Book of James admonished: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

So how should Christ followers respond if, heaven forbid, Hillary Clinton is elected president on Tuesday? What does God expect of those of us who are doers of the word, and not hearers only?

We should accept that Madam Clinton is our new commander-in-chief.

Indeed, Romans 13:1-2 declares, unequivocally:

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.”

That’s not to say that Christ followers must submit to government dictates that clearly contravene God’s law. No, in such cases, we are to stand up for our faith.

Like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego the three Hebrew men who, according to the book of Daniel, refused to bow down before the image of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar. The king threw them in a fiery furnace, but God miraculously delivered them from harm.

As it happened, Nebuchadnezzar later heard a voice from heaven, which told the Babylonian king what was decreed for him: His royal authority was taken from him. He was driven insane to the point that he was as a wild animal, eating grass like an ox.

Only after the passage of time did he sufficiently recover his sanity to acknowledge that the Most High was sovereign over all kingdoms on earth, giving them to whomsoever He wished.

Well, I do not know to whom God, in His perfect wisdom, has chosen to be the next president of the United States.

I pray that it’s not Hillary Clinton. But, if it is, this Christ follower is going to trust in the Lord – who is infallible – and lean not on my own understanding.

For the life of me, I have never understood how someone could claim to be a democrat and a Christian.

Romans 13:1-2 only applies when the leadership is good and not bad.
