To: Arthur McGowan

Regarding the article in this thread, what is the position of the Catholic Church regarding this Orthodox teaching? It goes into greater detail than I’ve come across as a Catholic, although some of them are part of the Maronite Eastern Rite tradition.

The teaching of the Catholic Church on the matter is to be found in the apostolic constitution of Pius XII proclaiming the dogma of the Assumption.

Pius did not define whether Mary died, although in the West, the majority opinion has been that she did not. If there is any movement, it is in the direction of the Eastern belief that she did.

There are those who argue that Mary herself would have desired to experience death, in imitation of Jesus. It can be argued that, Jesus having already conquered death, it was more fitting that Mary should be a sign of that victory precisely by not dying.
