What kind of tree?

This may seem frivolous, but I assure you it is real. I'm on a small committee to select a tree for planting to honor a good man's memory who passed away 2 years ago. He was a moral man, a Christian, a father, and a good husband.

Redwood trees grow REALLY fast...at least in the western US.

The local nurseries have given us mostly pretty lame and obvious suggestions. We’ve already seen much better ideas here in the last few minutes. I love F.R....

If you go to a nursery, make sure to talk to their horticulturist (often the owner). The help usually only have superficial knowledge.

I believe NCSU is a land grant university. Consider calling their extension office - they are there to help with land utilization questions, including horticultural ones. The extension agents are usually well aware of all the unique ecosystems in the state and can provide nuanced advice. They can get you in touch with a lot of people who know what they are doing.

White Oak. I agree with the suggestion of The White Oak. My Buddy and I, here in Charlevoix, salvaged a section of shipwreck planking approximately 10'x6'x2' off the shore of Cross Village,in Lake Michigan, north of Harbor Springs, over twenty five years ago. It was submerged for over eighty years, and came from the schooner Jura, built in 1856, and wrecked in 1906 from what my research revealed. Over the course of decades underwater,and the waves washing sand constantly over and around it, sands and shapes it somewhat. After salvaging it, and disassembling it, we stacked it,using lengths of 1x4x1 inch pine stickers to separate the planking, and allowing air to circulate around and through the levels. After five years of slow ,covered drying, I built two tables from it. One end table, , and one coffee table, approx.3'x2' with a 4 inch thick top. For the legs, we welded anchor chain in a special jig to make them straight, and made brackets of 1.5 inch wide steel bar-stock. The wood is a combination of dark olive green, shot- through with the light honey color of the oak. The dark variations are the result of the iron oxide underwater rusting process leeching through the wood. The coffee table alone weighs about eighty pounds, and is very impressive. At the time I built them, digital cameras were not ubiquitous as they are now, so I don't have photos to share, as I don't have a printer, but they are truly unique and impressive for White Oak that is over two hundered years old.

Crepe Myrtle. They bloom all summer and make good shade.

They don’t grow overly large either. They bloom in a number of colors. My favorite is a deep, rich, purple, but, they also come in red, pink and white.

Or Dogwood.

Does Magnolia grow there?

Crepe Myrtles grow very well here, and are very common.
Magnolia does well here as well. Dogwoods, not so well.

I would be surprised if a California Coastal Redwood would thrive there. They need fog to get moisture once they reach a certain age/height.

The Sandhills are good for 3 things:
Golf
Horses
Pine trees

If a pine it should be the Longleaf variety as that’s the native one and becoming more scarce because to propagate naturally it needs fire. It’s also one of the prettier pines.

Native to your area is a variety called Sand Hickory.

We still have millions of Dogwood trees in the canyons of the central Sierra Nevada.

The Dogwood is an “understory” tree, requiring shade to propagate.
