Even jokes have their limits.
During his show May 26, Conan OBrien invited actress and recent Judiaism convert Natasha Leggero onto his show. Leggero praised her new religion for treating abortion as cool enough to have on every Jewish holiday. After all, she reasoned, its good to have a back-up to fall on, just like AAA for cars.
Besides performing as a stand-up comedian, the 42-year-old created and stars in Comedy Centrals Another Period and has acted in films including Lets Be Cops, Neighbors and Hes Just Not That Into You.
After discussing her recent marriage, Leggero informed Conan that she had recently converted to Judaism by taking 19 four-hour courses.
Raised Catholic, Leggero slammed her former Catholic school run by mean nuns.
[M]aybe they hate women, because nuns were so mean to me, she said before slyly inserting, and of course, the priests are like so nice to the boys.
She found Judaism, on the other hand, a beautiful religion.
You get to have a weekly Shabbat, she gushed, which is just like a party every Friday.
In the middle of her appearance, Leggero revealed just why she was such a fan of Judaism: abortion.
Youre part of this beautiful religion seeped in culture, she gushed about her new religion, before adding, Abortions are cool.
As the audience laughed, Conan disagreed.
I dont think they go around saying abortions are cool, he said. Not like the Fonz (a famously cool character from Happy Days).
His sidekick, Andy Richter, prompted even more laughter by commenting, Thats on the PSA, Judaism: Abortion is cool.
Trying to regain control of the abortion conversation, Conan again started to say no one called abortion cool, when Leggero interrupted, No, they do!
I mean, you could get an abortion on every Jewish holiday and it would be okay, she hyped.
But when Leggero likened abortion to a contract with a towing company, the audience changed its tune towards her.
Im not saying I am going to get an abortion but, you know, its just nice to its like AAA. Like, youre not going to use all those tows, but no, its just nice to know she stumbled as some in the audience booed. Video below.
The cheers and applause returned when Conan said, I just was given a signal; the Jews dont want you anymore.
Dont clap that, she retorted. My rabbi would be very upset by that. No, I love Judaism.
She switched back to her bashing of Catholicism, the religion where they believe that even if you are raped, you should not get an abortion.
Right? she checked. This is my comedy act.
Changing topics (somewhat), Leggero told Conan that she confessed to a priest in Rome that she was converting. He was cool about it, she said, and asked her to still attend to church once a year.
Conan concluded, I dont know what religion youre going to be in a year, but it will not be either Jewish or Catholic.
Leggero has long made abortion a topic of her career. In 2013, she asked in a Facebook post, What are the most popular abortion names? while in 2014 she tweeted that she would no longer perform in states where abortion isnt legal.
During Comedy Centrals 2015 Roast of Justin Bieber Leggero laughed about Biebers (non-existent) close call with abortion as he sat next to her.
Justin was born to a teenage single mom. No wonder hes got moves. He was in the womb dodging a coat hanger, she said.

The Motion Picture Production Code sure could be useful today...she’s a disgusting nasty person.
That’s history.
Sorry, that tired old trope has expired. This woman was in elementary school in the 1980s, not the 1940s. Catholic school teachers at that point were nearly indistinguishable from public school teachers. There *might* have been a modern-dressed Sister as principal or religion teacher.
Maybe it’s a case of “any stigma is good enough to beat a dogma”?
Traditional Jewish teaching for more than 3,000 years is that abortion is prohibited for both Jew and non-Jew. There is a very small exception to save the life of the mother, as pagan practice was to kill the mother to to save the (male) child.
The original Hebrew of Genesis 9:6 specifically states “adam b’adam” (”mankind in mankind”) in prohibiting the shedding of blood. There has never been doubt that this prohibits killing in the womb.
In America, anyone can make up anything they want and call it by the name of any traditional religion regardless of accuracy.
'Nuff said.
You get to have a weekly Shabbat, she gushed, which is just like a party every Friday.
Yeah. That's because G-d created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. That's something you would not have heard about in the Catholic Church.
That doesnt mean that Judaism outlaws abortion,...
I would think any group of people who survived the Nazis would outlaw abortion.
Judaism is a religion of law and statute whose source is G-d. Abortions, like everything else, is strictly regulated by Divine Law. It isn't identical to the Catholic doctrine, but it isn't identical to secular liberalism either.
You're spreading hooey.
Judaism is a legal system. It regulates everything in life. And if there is no formal system of punishment it is merely because Jews are in exile and no longer have the Temple and Sanhedrion. These will be re-established eventually.
Some three hundred years ago even Jews in the diaspora lived under the Theocratic rule of the Rabbinate--a situation which should be reinstated.
Judaism teaches to not harm people, but teaches liberty too. There are tradeoffs to make in that.
Judaism is a Theocratic religion--in fact, the Theocratic religion. The Torah is full of punishments for violations of commandments (even if the criteria to carry them out made them extremely rare).
All Torah-observant Jews live in a portable Theocracy in exile.
Oh my goodness.
Judaism is nothing but Law.
You're an ignoramus.
No religion is less libertarian than Judaism. It is an all-embracing legal system of totalitarian proportions, which is what G-d meant it to be.
Have you ever read the Book of Joshua?
You know, where Joshua exterminates seven entire nations because G-d commanded him to?
May God grant her the grace of repentance and conversion.

Not a Jew, so I'm not up on all that, but I'm guessing she's adhering to one of the less, uhhh, "rigerous" variants of modern Judaism.
Whatever. She's in show business. She'll drop this and be something else in a half decade or so.
This young woman is a disgrace. She’s either ignorant or very evil. The Jewish community should denounce what she said.
Too many people think “The Blues Brothers” is real and try to pass it off as their own true story.
Thank you. In Judaism, abortion is only acceptable to protect the woman from a physically harmful pregnancy.
“Col. Klink’s” father, the musician and conductor Victor Klemperer, wrote a very interesting book about his life under the Nazis and later. Robert Clary (the little Frenchman) also wrote a book about his family’s experiences during the War.
Other than Bob Crane, whose violent death was not really a surprise, considering his life, most of the cast had excellent careers after the show.
To me the most fascinating was Leon Askin (General Burkhalter)
Fled from Vienna to the US in 1940 and, served in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Forces.
Lived to the ripe old age of 98.
It sounds like he deserved a ripe old age!
