“But the real Catholic Church, unlike a schismatic “church”, does not bless up to three marriages by the same person.”

Sure it does. It will bless 15 marriages by the same person if the first 14 ended with bought and paid for annulments.

Time for bed, et.

Well, in point of fact it is far more likely than not that my people have been Catholic centuries longer than yours, ...

Your people, like my people, were Catholic up until 1054 A.D. when y'all decided to wander into the desert.

Notwithstanding the hyperbole, you do have a point. Before Vatican II, Church annulments were rare.

It is important to note that annulments are (supposed to be granted) for invalid marriages which is completely different than what the Orthodox allow.

It looks like battle lines are being drawn against this pope. He certainly is a bear-baiter.

I think it will get worse before it gets better.

That’s correct. What we have is effectively an ecclesiastical divorce granted by a hierarch...but limited to two max.

Why do y’all allow up to three marriages?

I hear there are also openings in Siberia, the Bermuda Triangle, and the newly established Archdiocese of ISIS.

We allowed 3 marriages only from the 900s in reaction to the fourth marriage of an emperor, Leo VI, which Rome allowed. This cause a great scandal and the Tome of Union of 920 limited people to three marriages in both the Latin and Eastern Churches.

Here's an article on the subject by Fr. Meyendorff, who was a professor at St. Vlad's seminary and Fordham which is informative:

http://jbburnett.com/resources/meyendorff_Christian-Marriage-in-Byzantium.pdf

As an aside, on page 4 of the paper you will see a reference to an Emperor, Constantine V Copronymos. Copronymos means “Sh*t eater”! We really didn't like him very much...!

An historical curiosity is the fact that it wasn't until the 9th century that church marriages were performed for the common folk. Previous to that, they were married in secular ceremonies and maybe then went to the priest for communion. Nobles started having mandated church weddings in the 6th century.
