That the bread and wine are somehow really the body and blood of Christ is an ancient Christian belief This is my basic contention, that it is an ancient Christian belief. That somehow, the Holy Spirit transforms the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. Transubstantiation is a futile attempt by humans to understand what we can only partially know.
The devil is too much in the "somehow" details.
