The Hebrew word translated as “kill” in Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17 (in most, but not all Bible translations) is Hebrew “ratsach”, which means “murder”. Carrying out a death penalty is not murder.

Thank you for posting that.

States have the right and obligation to protect their populace from murderers.

I’m no theologian, but I know the Catechism.

He can make a call for abolition of the Death Penalty, but his statement that “Thou shall not kill” applies to the guilty”, does not comport with Catholic teaching.

The state has the right to use the death penalty.
