Nope, denominations were invented to differentiate one dissident group from the others.

Oh so denominations first started when the Orthodox Christians refused to recognize the Catholic pope and the Orthodox claimed that the Latin branch, Catholicism, was seeped in heresy. The Catholics "protested" against that and thus became the first "Protestants"--according to your way of thinking.

(Pretty valid argument from the Orthodox Christians seeing what Catholicism believes today)
