...During this time I was single, and friends set me up on a lot of dates. When they asked me if there were any deal breakers, I explained there was only one: No religious people.
Shortly after I made that declaration, I started dating a guy who mentioned, in passing, that he attended a Presbyterian church. I flinched. But I liked him, and because I was so religiously illiterate, I didnât understand that some Presbyterian churches are evangelical. I assumed he was a cultural Christian, like the few other Christians I knew.
A few months into the relationship he confronted me with a question I didnât expect to get from any person I knew: âDo you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior?â

Have you actually read the article. Its a very powerful testimony if you read the whole thing. Its basically a story of how she got saved and the only thing that changed about her view of Christmas was that she now was unhappy with how commercialized and focused on Santa Clause it has become.
She probably changed all his radio station and stole his Jesus fish.
Her mind is being renewed - give it time. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal to her what she said here - God became Flesh to be the Savior of Mankind.
I’ll know she’s progressing much further when she leaves the Abortion Party.
Maybe because they didn’t read the story.
Lousy headline and totally misleading from the contents as written by Ms Powers - perhaps done for shock value. Note that this is not a new article freshly written but instead; " ... adapted from The Christmas Virtues: A Treasury of Conservative Tales for the Holidays (Templeton Press)."
What Ms Powers actually articulates is that she has lost her 'love' of the commercial Christmas and moved to the appreciation of the Christ-centered Christmas. A very logical step for one who has become a Believer!
This is the pertinent paragraph from this adapted article; "But then I realized that I had allowed the secular celebrations of Christmas to crowd out its transcendent meaning. As theologian N. T. Wright points out, it's Christmas that is the moment when God launched a "divine rescue mission" of humankind."
This article and the others she has written about her faith have I am certain caused her no end of scorn from her friends and co workers. She has a sincere faith and needs our support not our ridicule. I admire how public she has been about her testimony and I pray that God would continue to lead and guide her.
God didnt just condescend to come to earth as a human. He came as a helpless infant. The King of Kings was born amid barnyard animals and piles of hay after His lowly parents were turned away from better lodgings. They were not turned away from anywhere. Caesar Augustus had caused chaos by his census, resulting in all returning to their birth city; so the inn was full to the brim already.
Liberals are the most hate-filled, mean-spirited, envious, resentful, vicious, close-minded, violent, murdering, censoring, book-burning, ignorant, uneducated, unskilled, childish, prejudiced, racist, women-hating, man-hating, perverted, thieving, destructive, American-hating, Christian-hating, muslim-loving, communist, vulgar, dirty, smelly, regressive, restrictive, prohibitive, bed-wetting, and scared little lying idiots God has ever created.
They are NEVER Christian. They only time they declare that is if there is something to be gained from it.
Thank you for that post! I too actually read the article.
I found her story wonderful. A person is surrounded by atheists, feminists and worse, politicians, and the love of Christ finds and saves her.
And she is right (which is not something I often say about Kirsten Powers). I still love the glow of a Christmas tree, the music, decorations and gatherings, but I know it is all a far, far distant second to the true meaning of the season. That realization does take the shine off of what most people think of Christmas. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I dont think they read the article, but instead just the title.
She’s absolutely right regarding the Christmas celebrations. If a Martian were to land here the week before Christmas he certainly would not get the impression that people were paying respect to a God.
I am Roman Catholic, and find her piece honest and exceptional. Jim glad to read other FReepers (of other faiths) believe so as well.
I have followed other articles on her conversion to Catholicism. She is on a journey and is sharing (and inspiring) along her progression.
Happy Chanukah to you!
It still strikes me as her “hatred” of Christmas comes about from her left wing politics. Im tired of listening to people bitch about Christmas. Its pretty much the only thing anymore which embraces our traditions, youth, and the feeling of love being with friends and family.
Excellent post Hildy, thanks for saying what I was thinking!
Thanks, I needed that laugh on Sunday, actually reading the story before need jerk comments. Funny, you crack me up.
Sometimes Jews make the best Christians. Just saying.
She has changed over the years. She was once a reactionary leftist. Now, she is more conservative than many Republicans. She still tilts left but you can see a glimmer of hope once in a while.
Kirsten Powers is now a Catholic joining the ever increasing list of notable converts to Catholicism.

You are sadly mistaken. Christ died for everyone and honestly it is easy to see the effects of Kirsten’s salvation on her life. I honestly am more worried about your bitterness, please remember not to let your love grow cold.
That's part of the unofficial rules for this site. As is defending one's thoughtless quip after being outed for not reading the story.
