You are quite mistaken. The Catholic Church has been very explicitly against abortion since the Didache (approx. 95 A.D.), the first catechism of the Catholic Church --- and continuously through Pope Francis.
For those who might have missed:
Didache ("The Lord's Teaching to the Heathen by the Twelve Apostles"):
There are two ways, one of life and one of death; and between the two ways there is a great difference. Now, this is the way of life:The second commandment of the Teaching: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not corrupt boys; do not fornicate; do not steal, do not practice magic; do not go in for sorcery; do not murder a child by abortion or kill a newborn infant.

All these twitters of the Pope mean nothing. He appoints bishops who he knows IN ADVANCE are staunchly committed to giving Communion to abortionists. McElroy was famous PRIMARILY for an article in AMERICA attacking Cardinal Burke and promoting Communion for abortionists. Cupich has instructed us that we should be no more bothered by abortion and vivisection than by unemployment.
This is the Pope’s REAL message. The message that actually gets through.
