‘I believe in the Bible’: Trump courts Christian right

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump recently showed up at a gathering of Iowa conservative Christian voters with a copy of the Bible in hand.

“See, I’m better than you thought,” he said. Then came a black-and-white photograph from his confirmation to further prove his Christian cred.

“Nobody believes this,” he said to laughs. “What went wrong?”

As the Republican presidential front-runner and billionaire businessman tries to maintain his lead in early polls with rivals gaining, Trump is increasingly courting a wing of the Republican Party that might seem antithetical to his brand: evangelical Christians.

After initially declining the invitation, Trump spoke Friday in front of several hundred social conservative leaders at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit in Washington. He joined a speaking program that includes Republican rivals with long records of dedication to religious causes — among them, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist pastor, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who wants his colleagues to risk a government shutdown to block funding to Planned Parenthood.

Trump brought his Bible along once again, and briefly addressed his faith between attacks on his rivals and Democrats.

“I believe in God. I believe in the Bible. I’m a Christian,” he said. He ended by bemoaning the increased use of the term “Happy Holidays” in place of “Merry Christmas” as a sign that Christianity is under attack. As president, he said, he’d reverse the trend.

In Oklahoma City later in the day, Trump had kind words for Pope Francis as the Catholic leader visited Trump’s hometown of New York. “He is a unifier. He wants to bring people together, and I think that’s a great thing,” Trump said. “That’s what we have to do. We have to bring people together.” He did mention that he disagrees with Francis on global warming.

I won’t speak to each person’s faith or level thereof. I do think from positions taken and things I have read, George Pataki doesn’t seem to be a faith filled sort. I know he is a non factor but he is running. I have personally felt based on observation and discernment the most obvious Christians on the big debate stages were Cruz,Carson, Huckabee, and Walker.

One of the Trump golf foursome is Alice Cooper the rock star. Recently heard him speak about Trump. He compared Trump to his own life. People see him as a rock star. They do not always know that he is a born again Christian been married 40 years. Sober 30 and uses his public persona ro reach troubled youth. He says the public Trump is nothing like the private Trump. He is thoughtful , generous and kind.

Ironically Ben Carson who has known Trump for decades echoed the same sentiments

His daughter Ivanka married an orthodox Jew and has converted. She keeps kosher kitchen and family turns all electronics off Friday - Saturday.
Trumps closest partner was Jewish and he delighted in mentoring the young Donald alongside his father.

When Trump was asked by Tim Scott a couple days ago the two things in his life that influenced him the most he didn’t hesitate in answering his family. He also mentioned the close tie he had with his father

<< One dear friend would share as a child she would tell.a lie just before confession so she would have something to confess. BLess her heart she passed with that same childlike innocence. >>

How sweet. I get that.

Not to be too awfully grandiose, I consider the world in the West, where we by and large have to struggle for so little and, generally speaking, live in comfort and excess to such an extent that we do not have to steal for food or clothing, or shelter, therefore we are more easily attracted to steal actually from God Himself, which is the much greater sin. (We are in a hugh and series test, methinks.)

Blessed and enriched by material things I can devote my time and indulgence to pleasing myself among all these things and put God off, to a later time when I have nothing “better” to do, or after I have run out of steam from the day’s attachments.

Intellectually speaking I believe we all understand our disordered attachments to shiny things, pleasures and the multitude of ways we can entertain ourselves in the Western world, so our sin is more one of self-indulgence, distraction and attachment to self-indulgence, not for theft of food and shelter. (Which actually is not a sin, but for argument sake, you know what I’m saying.)

We are at much greater risk of entertaining ourselves right into Hell, if you know what I mean, and all the churches seem to provide us more comfort and ease, right along with the fallen culture, than teaching us and warning us and guiding us. I simply can not believe the fall of my own diocese, in the short span of 16 years. The idea of spirituality and Church is nearly unrecognizable compared to even the 40’s and the 50’s.

We can think ourselves quite devout now days, when we actually don’t have a clue. The differences in Christian America of yesterday, from the country club, new agey, warm and fuzzy “faith” of today, is nearly breath taking.

There are generations now who have no identity in the Church of old. They’ve never even seen it. We were warned of wolves leading many to perdition. Heavy and mournful are the times we are trying so hard to navigate, but Jesus wondered aloud if upon his return would their be any faith left. (This pope is not helping.)

You are my confessor this week. :) Rita

You are forgiven. We are all forgiven if we accept Christ into our lives. And that would include presidential candidates.

I was baptized as a youth. My parents believed it should be my decision Dedicated as a baby

After a very stressful divorce my X was given the house and I the barn. Thought it a variation of mine and shaft. To make a long story short through the growth realized one day that it wasn’t by accident God chose a carpenters family and that I had been given a stable for a new life - rebirth.

Got to work and now live in that old barn. What a blessing.
He’s now in charge. Well most of the time. Lol what a struggle life is!

What you said about our coddled, cushy lives here in the western hemisphere in general, and United States in particular is true. I marvel at the lifestyle God has allowed me to enjoy.

But one thing my wife and I both do, FIRST thing in the morning, is to have our own separate and private devotional quiet time with the Lord. It makes all the difference. That and tithing. God takes care of a tither. A friend was lamenting the sorry state of the economy, and crying about what to do. I told him to just keep on tithing. It was God’s idea, and He has PROMISED to REWARD it. So it’s a no-brainer.

You have given me chill bumps! I thank you for such jewels of courage and perseverance. From Knox to Trump’s mother!

We should continue praying for Trump, and he is easy to pray for, because of his sincerity, awkwardness, and that rather longing look in his eyes when discussing seriously these things of faith, from his past.

Regardless of the “Religion” attached he was an active participant of his own will to follow God and his rules...

I would caution you and others from making such declarations as this in the future as God speaks against it in the Bible.

We have all fallen short of the Glory of God ad He alone decides the value and depth of each persons Faith, not Membership

God Bless

Rev Steve
