Following Christ is NOT a spectator sport.
We are engaged in spiritual warfare, which does NOT include communicating with the spirits of dead people, which are actually demons.
In this world, many people have an almost instinctive fear of snakes and most of them will either run away like their hair's on fire or greet it with massive, full effort, total annihilation.
I think that reaction is coded into our human DNA dating back to our First Parents and that thing in the garden.
As an observer, I've seen how those genes get expressed more fully in some than in others. You know genetics. It's the Bell curve, luck of the draw and all of that.
However, as both spectator and participant, I also know that not all snakes are poisonous killers lurking in the grass for an innocent foot to step upon it.
Most are very beneficial helpers that are specially designed to keep things the bad stuff in check and the system in balance.
Unfortunately, DNA gets in the way for some and they don't have the discrimination to know the non-poisonous from the poisonous and do NOT want to learn.
They stay "safe" knowing that snakes are bad. All of them. So, Kill 'em all and let God sort it out.
Those who tend a garden have a different opinion. They usually know and can tell difference between the good from the bad and proceed accordingly.
As a former barefoot boy in a backyard full of clover growing up in my ol' Kentucky home, and now as an aspiring gardener, I have slowly acquired a limited working knowledge about snakes.
I think that's why I'm not having the same reaction that you are having.
