Pope Francis' approval rating nosedives among conservatives (Catholic Caucus)

Pope Francis is not as popular a pontiff as he used to be in the United States — especially among conservatives — according to a new Gallup survey out Wednesday. A larger share of American Catholics say they don’t have a favorable view of their church’s spiritual leader. A little more than seven in 10 (71 percent) have a favorable image of Francis, a drop of 18 percentage points from last year.

It seems out of place to me, for a pope to be talking about global warming. It just strains believability to me, that there is a theology about this subject.

I hope you are right . What troubles me is the Pope’s embrace of Marxism . Doesn’t an embrace of Marxism put the Pope in the Heretic column?

Seventy one percent favorable? That is way too high.

Because you never post anything positive about the Church. The popularity of a Church leader is a non-issue. Who cares if Americans like the Pope? It's not a freaking popularity contest. Not one thing has changed at Church because of him. Liberal priests are liberal, Conservative priests are conservative. Same old, same old.

This is a typical hit piece. I can't stand it any more. I really can't.

Rather it brings more interest to FR. Take it as a gentle correction.

but no such procedures exist for a Pope.

The Borgia's found a way...

Karl Marx HATED religion.

He called it ‘the opiate of the masses’.

I’m sure he’s laughing in his grave at the Pope being his biggest cheerleader.

Would you still complain if the article came from a conservative site? No one is forced to read it.

Doesn’t an embrace of Marxism put the Pope in the Heretic column?

It would come close if he actually stood up directly and espoused the wonders of Karl Marx. The Church has proclaimed loudly since Rerum Novarum the evils of Marxism. Pope Francis is taking a more circuitous route and not being direct. He will deny he is a socialist, I'm sure, while promoting their ideas.

Francis is the inevitable result about what happens when the fashion statement of electing the first non-European Pope trumps the common sense of an adequate background investigation.

Sort of like the American sheeple did with BO, except that I'd expect the College of Cardinals to be a little less swayed by fashion trends.

If they would've wanted to make a real fashion statement, they would've picked one of the Cardinals from Africa or Asia.

Amazing how the world has changed. Now a pope has a favorability rating? Two views. Ten years ago, you never heard of negative favorability for a pope, that would have been a ludicrous as a favorability rating for God. Second, that this pope has stooped to the lowest level of politics (global warming, socialism...) is disgraceful and he has therefore earned a “favorability rating”...anything a liberal touches...dies. Catholics beware (this is what happened to the Episcopal church).

I’m disturbed that it was ever high enough to “nose dive” in the first place.

I seem to recall JPII being rated favorably from the very beginning, so I’d venture to say that such measures are nothing new. In JPII’s case, the rating seems to have been based upon the soundness of the principals he espoused.

Yes! It is just a stupid premise, a waste of words and bandwidth. The Pope is not a political leader and he’s not a politician. He’s just a fallen Christian like the rest of us who happens to be trying to herd 1 Billion “cats” on their journey to heaven.

The Borgia’s raised the practice of manipulative and downright cutthroat political maneuvering to an art form long before even Prince Machiavelli came along. The best they could do was to engineer scandalous revelations while protecting their own vulnerabilities.

Even in very tyrannical regimes, there is still something called “public opinion”.

That’s just not true. It’s the usual hit peice. Oh the Pope is losing popularity. Who cares? It’s not a popularity contest. No one has called me up and asked my opinion. Where did these numbers come from?

“Pope Francis said a couple of months back that his time as Pope will be a short one.”

Yeah, and Obamacare will save your family 2500 bucks a year on insurance.

I’m not even Catholic and I’m already sick of this guy.

I would tell your friend to search out a parish that has a conservative priest and congregation as I’m guilty of the same mentality. Here in Milwaukee area that generally means areas with large percentages of immigrants...hell of a lot more old school. I’m not so worried about this lefty Pope as I am about the parishes in my immediate area of the burbs.

This last week I went to the local parish because they had a 7:30am mass and it was the only one I could make it to. Never look forward to going there but try to find the message I need when I go there. Here in the last week we had the Planned Parenthood videos come out and 5 servicemen killed in tennessee...the petitions this week?

A bunch of thank you God for our nice summer weather and hopefully we all get the chance to enjoy it. My 12 yo daughter caught me shaking my head and asked me why I did it afterwards and I explained I just couldn’t stand the moral cowardice of a parish that sticks to fluff when there is some much real evil going on around us.

There are still good priests and parishes out there but you have to look real hard...I know it is worth it.
