Also, things Jesus don’t commonly appeal to the Talmudic Jew anyhow. At least not that they will let on to you.

The "unbalanced" depiction of Christ's face is ancient. The Christ of Sinai Icon at the Monastery of St Catherine is one of the oldest icons of Christ and has an unbalanced look, but not angry.

I have heard that this is to convey both attributes of compassion and judgment as well as the dual nature of Christ.

Cover the left side of his face and look at it. Now do you see a serene friendly Jesus?

No. He is still grim and forbidding, not inviting anyone to come to him or follow him.

“..I went to CUA...”

We will be visiting CUA this summer with our rising senior daughter who is considering it for college. I love the mosaic/icon/image picture also. I have been to the basilica, although it was probably over 10 years ago so don’t specifically remember this, but I do recollect the general beauty and sacred feel of the basilica.

Do you know if CUA is conservative/less liberal at all? We are hoping ...

Dear stonehouse01,

There's perhaps a bit more variety of folks. Plenty of liberals, but not a small number of conservatives. Of course, the standard American axis of liberal/conservative doesn't work that well with Catholicism, and you see similar differences at CUA. And there's always the tendency toward an unthinking agreement with the inanities of the hierarchy.

If I allowed either of my kids to go to a Catholic college, CUA would have made the list.
