DOCTRINE OF SALVATION BY WORKS Eph 2:9
Bible study notes | 1993 | R. B. Thieme, Jr.

DOCTRINE OF SALVATION BY WORKS

Eph 2:8-10

(8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

(9) Not of works, lest any man should boast.

(10) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

  1. Definition.
    1. Salvation by works is a false doctrine which rejects God's grace policy in the provision of eternal salvation for the human race.
    2. Salvation by works rejects the total helplessness of mankind under real spiritual death. Real spiritual death not only means separation from God at birth and total depravity, but it also means helplessness to do anything about our status quo.
    3. Salvation by works makes the distinction between Christianity and religion.
      1. In Christianity, mankind is eternally saved through the work of God. God the Father planned it, God the Son executed it on the cross, and God the Holy Spirit reveals it.
      2. However in religion, man seeks to gain the approbation of God through some category of human works, self-sacrifice, personality, or energy of the flesh. Christianity is not a religion. In Christianity, God does the work and man is the beneficiary apart from any merit or any works.
    4. There are at least seven categories of salvation by works rejected by the Word of God, as in Eph 2:9, "It is not by works."

So you twist my words and end with that?

The Right to Speak is what I’m talking about - not the ‘social justice’ agenda. I’m getting a face full of that from the ELCA right now, and we’re leaving.

I’m talking about the BEGINNING of the conversation about God - the one that leads to Christ.

And the word ‘discernment’. It’s a giant red flag. It’s what anybody wants it to mean.

The job you have AFTER being saved is to bring others to salvation, not sit in judgment over how the others are reading the Book.

Christ isn’t complicated. Christ makes sense. Those that would obfuscate through ‘discernment’ are the ones that better start using their sniffers to see who they might really be working for.

Discernment - Discern this: There are many that have never heard the story of Christ in context. Concentrate on those cats for a while. I know why poor people will give you the shirt off their back while the rich and educated pass you by. To the poor, Christ makes sense. No discernment necessary. Amongst the poor, there is real, active evil.

Let the rich make plans. You want to call that ‘social justice’, go ahead. I call it selling to people who are ready to by something that sells itself. Christ doesn’t want your money. He wants your soul.

Poorest family in my Troop opened his home to another homeless kid. Didn’t have enough money to feed him or his boy, but gave his couch to this boy. I don’t have to put a word like ‘tithe’ on something like that. He has little, and gave what he couldn’t afford to give.

All three of them should know Christ, since they emulate him every day. Earning the right to talk about Christ is the challenge. More so since I am a vile, broken creature, which is why the Holy Spirit gets 100 percent of the credit here, if there is credit to be had at all.

Until you die, neither of you will know if you are right about the Book, and parts there of. You don’t have to discern Christ. 4 witnesses and the writings of a bunch of idolators in Rome is all I need in terms of whether Christ is who He said He was, and whether he can keep His promise.

From there, it is daydreaming about what His Father is like, and what Heaven is like, and about what we will be like when we shed this mortal coil. Will we see our families, and our pets, and we will care about things like the Kennedy assassination and who did it.

Life is hard. I will be happy enough to be dead and in Heaven with God and His Son.

My issue is trying to keep 13 to 17 year olds from committing suicide. That’s my ‘social justice agenda’.

My job is convincing them that God created them for a specific and critical element in His plan for the entire universe. Without him or her, God’s creation is not the same, and there isn’t as much joy in it as there needs to be.

So discern that, because that’s a problem worth solving, and prayer, and fasting. It’s really happening - kids committing suicide. Eagle Scouts with straight A’s committing suicide. It happened three weeks ago.

In the end, its faith. Belief, not fact. You want to argue the ‘angels on the head of a pin’ question, you’ll find an audience I suppose.

Talk to a kid. Failing that, help someone else who can talk to a kid. Suffer them, because they have everything and yet have nothing.

May God’s face shine upon you and boot your ass out of your chair and down to the Boy’s and Girl’s Club to clean toilets and find out what kids are thinking.

May the Holy Spirit fill you with His Words as you tell the Good News to people who have heard it, but not listened.

So much work to be done.

Ok, I see what you mean and have heard a lot about the seventieth week of Daniel being held up for a couple thousand years or so but do not take it too seriously although I am not saying it is not true.

It’s the mind of Christ.

The unity of being in Him.

His word is going to be the thing we all come up with for an answer.

Is all you can do use potty language on the Religion Forum?

That’s against the rules and almost every post of yours has contained it.

If you don’t like the RF, then stay off it. But don’t try to defile it with your language. That’s a worse testimony than what you’re complaining about.

I do agree that The sacrifices and death of Christ opened Heaven to all of us. That our Baptism and following God’s will enable us to join Him in Heaven

How is that the GOOD NEWS

Show me where I have one false statement about the Scriptures, then you will have my undivided attention.

Your false statement about the teaching of Jesus Christ:
“the blasphemous teaching that in the Eucharist the adherent drinks the actual blood of Christ (contradicts the nature of God and His command to NEVER drink the blood), and the demonic requirement to sacrifice Jesus over and over again,”

1. The Mass

At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his Body and Blood. He did this in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the centuries until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 47).

Even a modestly informed Catholic can set an inquirer right and direct him to biblical accounts of Jesus’ final night with his disciples. Turning to the text, we read, “And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me’” (Luke 22:19).

2. The Eucharist (His Body and Blood)

In the Eucharist, and it centered on Jesus’ famous words in John 6:53: “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” He also said eating His Body and Blood was necessary for salvation.

You can try to deny His words or revert to the old Jewish covenant (which you accuse me of doing), but you are attempting to fool yourself and not Jesus.

Listen to God and let the Holy Spirit guide you.

Your comment: “You keep trying to slide back into a relationship under the old covenant, a performance based covenant. That is not the hallmark of the Church Age. It is a hallmark of Catholicism, however.

No that is right on the money.. Romanism is Judaism redux.. take time to read Galatians..

The sin of the unsaved will indeed be judged at the final judgement ..and the severity of their punishment determined..

However the saved, the elect ,have had their sins forgiven and covered by Christ.. When the Father looks at the saved..He does no see their sin, because it is washed away.. He sees Christ ... we are wrapped in Christ .We come to Him not because we deserve it or have earned it.. We come to Him solely on the merit of Christ.. Our sin debt has been paid..

John 3 :17 For God did not send his Son into the world mto condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not obelieved in the name of the only Son of God.

Yes Christ opened he door to heaven, and we must walk through the door by following God’s will with our faith and doing good works that please Him. That is earning it the hard way with His graces by loving God and our neighbor.
But Jesus told us that His yoke was easy and His burden was light.

Claiming that salvation is hard makes Jesus out to be a liar.

It’s actually those who teach that salvation is hard who are the liars.

If you don’t work, you can’t accomplish God’s will.

Sure you can. You can believe and trusting Him pleases Him more than trusting ourselves.

I have a problem with both the saved by faith and saved by works crowds,

One crowd brings a picture of rituals while both crowds brings a picture of stabbing people in the back and throwing garbage in the neighbors yards.

The first crow will go and confess to a priest while the other crowd will say ha ha ha I am saved by faith so go sit on it.

Don't eat the blood, the life is in the blood

Genesis 9:4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life , that is, its blood.

Leviticus 3:17 It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places, that you eat neither fat nor blood.”

Leviticus 7:26-27 Moreover, you shall eat no blood whatever, whether of fowl or of animal, in any of your dwelling places. Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.”

Leviticus 17:10-14 “If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourns among you eat blood.

“Any one also of the people of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who takes in hunting any beast or bird that may be eaten shall pour out its blood and cover it with earth. For the life of every creature is its blood: its blood is its life. Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any creature, for the life of every creature is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.

Leviticus 19:26 “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes.

Deuteronomy 12:16 Only you shall not eat the blood ; you shall pour it out on the earth like water.

Deuteronomy 12:23 Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, for the blood is the life , and you shall not eat the life with the flesh.

Deuteronomy 15:23 Only you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.

Acts 15:12-29 And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,

“‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, that the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things known from of old.’

Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers, with the following letter:

“The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”

Matthew 26:29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Mark 14:25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 22:18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Unbloody sacrifice

http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P41.HTM

1367 The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: "The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests, who then offered himself on the cross; only the manner of offering is different." "In this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner."188

Deuteronomy 12:16 Only you shall not eat the blood ; you shall pour it out on the earth like water.

When Christ died, His blood was poured out as was required by the law.

Hebrews 9:22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

Since without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins, a bloodless sacrifice is a useless one. It cannot atone for sin.

Jesus commanded His disciples to drink the cup. Catholics claim that doing so is partaking of the literal body and blood of Himself. However, if the mass is an unbloody sacrifice, where does the blood for the cup come from?

Which body of Christ is the priest sacrificing in the mass? The old one that walked this earth?

Or the new resurrected and glorified one? The Bible is very clear that without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sin. (Hebrews 9:22)

“For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” (Leviticus 17:11)

Despite the clear teaching of Scripture, Rome has an “unbloody sacrifice.” They say it’s a propitiatory sacrifice, but the Bible says without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. So not only is it unnecessary to sacrifice Christ again and again, but an unbloody sacrifice is worthless to make atonement for sin. An unbloody sacrifice is no sacrifice at all!" (By .45 Long Colt)

Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

This passage effectively nukes the whole Catholic doctrine of being able to lost your salvation and get it back again. Thanks to RnMom for pointing that out.

It does it on two levels. One is that it states that it is impossible to bring someone back to repentance if they walk away, so all the calls to *cross the Tiber* are meaningless.

The other is that by allegedly participating in the sacrifice each and every time the mass is offered, they are crucifying Christ to themselves again and holding Him up to contempt.

Then maybe you need to find out what genuinely born again believers believe and act like instead of what Catholics say about them.

Seems that the unsaved have no idea of the depth of gratitude that believers have towards God for His mercy and grace in saving us from sin.

The regenerate soul does NOT take the gift of eternal life so flippantly nor do they have that kind of attitude towards the unsaved.

We know where the unsaved are going and what they're going through cause we've all been there. Nothing would make us happier than to see others enter the freedom and eternal life that is found in Christ Jesus.

Wow! What a twisting of scripture that Staples guy flings! Let's just take one of his supposed gotchas.

His statement "St. Paul had already made very clear in Romans 2:6-7 that good works are necessary for eternal life, at least in one sense:".

Romans 2:7-7 has nothing to do with salvation or attaining eternal life. It's about the rewards those who serve diligently AFTER salvation.

But then, Staples fell for all the rest of the lies of the Catholic Church also just as he did the Preterists.

If Jesus and that apostles ate blood at the last supper they were sinning against the laws of God and therefore Jesus would not have been sinless nor would He have been able to save anyone.

Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?

And that is exactly what they are claiming, contradicting the scripture...

It makes no difference what the Catholics say about the Protestants or what the protestants say about the Catholics.

The point being, the ones who goes around saying they are saved may not be saved at all, I have also been there a long time ago.

The first person along the road I passed and knew that I should have stopped and helped, (while driving to church mind you) gave me a hint that I was not saved.

I had been listening to a self righteous preacher who had no more idea what Paul was talking about than the man in the moon.

Your works of faith may be the only Bible some people will ever read and just to make a long story short, it was from those kind of people that I actually started reading about our lord Jesus Christ.

Yes, we are forgiven our sins.

Joshua 2
31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

She had faith but her faith was shown by her works which is why she nor her family did not perish.

There is no doubt God knew the Woman`s faith but the spy’s had to see her works.

And also people who have not come to the knowledge of God can get the real thing from your works of faith faster in just one little act of kindness than they could get from a master of religion in ten years.
