(T)hese threads are alas usually not true discussions but merely a way for them to feel superior to those they disagree with.

By using the word "them", one can presume you mean Christians who don't agree with your sect of religion.

About the superiority thing, the Word of God trumps the catechism of the Catholic Church and all other sects' catechisms every single time...then, now, and forevermore.

We are told to walk humbly with God by the power of the Spirit and in Christ. Because it is Christ Who is our very reason for our hope and life eternal with Him. I readily admit to you that I do not always do humble very well, but He has His way of handling me when I act just like a proud Roman Catholic.

“Them” refers to angry selfrighteous bigots from both sides.

and your answer proves my point, since you use the word “sect”.

I apologize for being snippy, since you are not one of those I was referring to.

A lot of the problems are logic and cultural errors, not theology per se. Illiterate Africans learn from preaching, and now a days from Nollywood films. City Filipinos read their bible, but older and poorer ones can barely read, but they learn about Jesus in plays, pageants and fiestas. For 1500 years, before the printing press and widespread literacy, few read the bible but people knew little intellectually about Jesus but they knew and loved him.

as for tradition, unless you are reading pdf files of ancient manuscripts, you bible was translated by ministers and Anglican bishops using ancient traditions.

If you are unsure what a text reads, you either ask your minister or find a good bible study to explain it. Yes, we rely on the Holy Spirit on how to apply it to our lives, but even then sometimes discernment of spirits is required.

I am glad you know the Lord and will pray for you
