I knew a priest that grew up in Poland and he had to hide that he was studying to be a priest because of the Soviets. He was ordained by John Paul, right before he became Pope. When the cold war was over he came to America.

The crazy thing was that his mother was an American citizen from Chicago, She had moved to Poland before the Soviets took over and she got stuck there. Anyway he has a lot of relatives in Chicago. I met him in Fort Wayne Indiana. He was a little mad that they kept putting him in Polish speaking parishes as he was trying to improve his English. He said the Soviets made them learn Russian. They were not allowed to learn English even though the Soviets taught their own kids English. Any way he was a really cool priest.

Yeah, same with the priest I know. First he'd been forced to learn German; then Russian. Those poor people! After the war, they thought they'd be free of oppression. Then came the Soviets...
