Your assessment is completely wrong. I grew up in that area and spent 45 years living there attending school and Church there. What they actually are are faithful devoted followers of Jesus in the Catholic Church. They are hard working honest people that are not going to put up with the lies spread by pseudo intellectuals that think they know more than the Church established by Jesus Christ Himself.
I suppose those who are part of the crowd could not and would not see the truth.
Those Catholic people I worked with also thought they were right and also justified their abominable behavior.
They can’t and won’t see it until they come out of it.
Neither will you.
