God speaks to the heart, why not to those that haven't heard the gospel, which would include those many that are "without the benefit of witnessing a single miracle or sermon?"
Many in the Old Testament became "Christians" from this method.

Clearly I should have been specific. Mary had come to believe in Christ without the benefit of witnessing a single miracle or sermon... because she believed in Jesus before Jesus was even born.
In this way she was very much unlike the Apostles.
