The short answer sounds petty and mean, but its true nonetheless: Luther jettisoned those extra Old Testament booksTobit, Sirach, 1 and 2 Maccabees, and the likebecause they were inconvenient. The Apocrypha (or, false writings), as they came to be known, supported pesky Catholic doctrines that Luther and other reformers wanted to suppresspraying for the dead, for instance, and the intercession of the saints. Hopefully, Mr. Becker's student did a little bit more homework and figured out that he was telling her a lie - Luther did NOT "jettison" the Apocryphal books. She would also realize that if he lied to her about that, what ELSE was he being dishonest about and WHY?
